Veterinary Nurse/Veterinary Technician, Research - College of Veterinary Medicine

The College of Veterinary Medicine invites applicants to apply for the position of Veterinary Nurse of Research. The primary purpose of this position is to provide veterinary nursing support for student teaching laboratories and departmental research. Assists in coordination and preparation for laboratories and research for all species as designated by the supervisor. Incumbent serves as a resource of information and guidance. Position supports teaching efforts by instructing students, interns, and residents. Reviews protocols, procures supplies, manages the research calendar, and participates in research. Collects and analyzes data as necessary. The veterinary nurse for research is responsible for compliance with all regulatory agencies regarding research space. Depending on experience and qualifications of successful candidate, individual will be hired in as a Veterinary Nurse 1, Veterinary Nurse 2, Senior Veterinary Nurse 1, or Senior Veterinary Nurse 2.

 

Qualifications

 

Typical Responsibilities:

Student Teaching Laboratories:

• Assists in coordination, preparation, and instruction for teaching laboratories for veterinary students, veterinary nursing students, residents, and interns in conjunction with the primary veterinary instructors.
• Ensures animals and supplies are properly prepared for laboratory.
• Supervises and maintains log for the administration of controlled medications.
• Instructs students on proper techniques for restraint, administering medications, placing IV and urinary catheters, aseptic technique, and microscopic evaluation of samples.
• Supervises the administration of or administers anesthetics and monitors patients under anesthesia as necessary during teaching laboratory.
• Is responsible for ensuring the compliance of regulations pertaining to teaching and research facilities as it pertains to the teaching laboratory.
• Collects and supervises the collection of samples for laboratory analysis as it may apply to the teaching laboratory.
• Ensures the proper dispensation of the animals after the laboratory. Instructs students in simulation laboratories using non-live teaching tools, such as the Syndaver and other simulation mode, as well as live models.

Coordinates and facilitates all departmental research projects: 

• Ensures the project has all animals, equipment, supplies, and staff required during necessary times.
• Performs physical exams on animals participating in the study.
• Provides collection and submission of laboratory samples required pre-, during, and post-study, ensuring proper methods, including storage of samples, to maintain the integrity of the study.
• Ensures all protocols and policies are followed in compliance with IACUC, USDA, and/or FDA, as well as UT policies.
• Brings any discrepancies to the attention of the primary investigator or other appropriate personnel.
• Provides nursing care to all animals on research project, including sample collection, administration of anesthesia and related duties, obtaining diagnostic imaging, and administering prescribed medications and/or treatment.
• If studies involved client-owned animals, provides communication to the clients, client services, and others regarding appointments and follow-up information.
• Maintains all medical records in compliance with all regulations regarding research and patient care.
• Attends all IACUC, USDA, and FDA inspections of the departmental research areas and ensures any violations are corrected in a timely manner.
• Performs data entry and develops spreadsheets for data analysis

Serves on-call for ICU and Emergency after-hours, or when necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Must be a graduate of an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA)- accredited program in Veterinary Technology with an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree
• Must obtain a license to practice in Tennessee within first year of employment
• Future graduates will be considered as long as degree is obtained prior to start date

Preferred Qualifications:

• Additional relevant experience.

 

The Veterinary Medical Center is operational 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, and 365 days per year. Occasional weekend, evening, or holiday work may be required of this position.
