The NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH), established in 1983, is one of the highest rated veterinary academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states. The hospital staffs over twenty clinical services with board certified specialists that are nationally and even internationally renowned, ensuring the VH is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. Patients benefit from the combined expertise of multiple specialists utilizing a team approach to patient health care. Each year, nearly 35,000 patients are treated in the VH. The VH provides compassionate care, state of the art specialty health care, expert clinical instruction for 4th year veterinary students from College of Veterinary Medicine, and ongoing investigation of innovative techniques and procedures to further advance the field of veterinary medicine.
Essential Job Duties
This position supervises a team of staff that provide imaging support in the Randall B Terry Companion Animal Medical Center (TC), the Equine and Farm Animal Veterinary Center (EFAVC) and the Health and Wellness Center (H&WC). The team is composed of Veterinary Diagnostic Technician and Veterinary Assistants, all uniquely trained in imaging techniques for an array of small and large animal elective and non-elective procedures.
A person in this department must possess advanced knowledge of diagnostic imaging in veterinary medicine in both small and large animals, and a strong desire to work with a team of varied individuals, providing guidance and leadership in a fast paced environment.
Management responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Ensuring that all patients in the centers will receive high quality care by collaborating with direct reports, specialty services & anesthesia providers to ensure the daily schedule runs smoothly
  • Overseeing the daily operations of the diagnostic imaging centers
  • Actively managing teams with frequent and direct communication on day-to-day responsibilities and workflow related to case assignment, modality selection, procedure & patient preparedness, and procedural times
  • Participating in recruitment, candidate selection, and hiring process
  • Conducting performance management; ensuring human resources policies and related information are shared with employees; resolution of disciplinary and grievance issues
  • Scheduling management including PTO requests, timesheets, on call, and holidays for staff
  • Delivering and overseeing training for all new employees & students, including patient preparation & positioning, equipment, and procedures through training manuals, SOP, and other educational platforms
  • Providing continuing education, staff meetings, and other staff resource and development opportunities
  • Evaluating and modifying protocols to ensure excellent patient care and hospital standards are current

Direct patient care duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Preparing imaging modality with appropriate physical setup according to procedure, including QC validation and supply acquisition
  • Preparing patients for various procedures through proper positioning, use of markers, drug calculation and usage for proper sedation and handling techniques
  • Adhering to cleaning and disinfecting policies between patient procedures
  • Maintaining imaging & monitoring equipment including; digital Xray machines, computed tomography (CT), Nuclear Scintigraphy, Ultrasound, Cardiac Interventional Unit, pulse oximeter, IV fluid pump

The position provides essential patient, departmental and hospital coordination of workflow, information and teaching with duties to include, but are not limited to:
  • Acting as the primary radiation safety liaison for all three medical hospitals. Providing all annual and biannual training to onboarding staff, house officers and faculty. Monitoring use of all diagnostic equipment and maintaining all radiation safety certifications/standards and inspections.
  • Working closely with state and federal Radiation Safety governing bodies to ensure departments are within guidelines and following all procedures.
  • Primary investigator for radiation limit inquiries and procedural deficiencies
  • Prepares department including staff and equipment, along with procuring and generation of reports for an array of state and federal inspections
  • General oversight of diagnostic imaging equipment maintenance, repair and purchases
  • Partnering with services internally to ensure regular evaluation of equipment including additional supplies, backup items, lifespan of instruments, and replacements
  • Creating relationships with vendors and repair companies for all equipment including tables, machines, service contracts, and software
  • Partnering with faculty and IT to implement and maintain external diagnostic portals for rDVM and industry vendors
  • Overseeing all record documentation with a variety of data relating to diagnostic software, images, and patient care with use of hospital information systems.
  • Orientation, teaching, and coaching new staff, students, interns and residents in related policies, procedures, and patient care
  • Ensuring department and staff are following hospital standards, infectious disease and hospital policies, along with OSHA, EHS and radiation safety policies and trainings
  • Overseeing logs associated with OSHA regulated equipment including signage, eye wash & shower stations
  • Collaborating with infectious disease committee and laboratory director to manage infectious disease guidelines, policies and nosocomial culture program

Qualifications


Minimum Experience/Education

Associate’s degree in Medical Sonography, Cardio/Vascular Sonography, or related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Some positions may require additional training, certifications, or licenses.

Other Required Qualifications
  • Previous experience in a veterinary setting.
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Previous experience with equine and farm animal patients
  • Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively at all times and maintain professionalism in emotionally charged / challenging situations.
  • Ability to provide high quality customer service.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Ability to work beyond scheduled work hours when needed.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and be an active participant in problem solving and team advancement.
  • Ability to work effectively with computers and electronics.
  • Ability to work independently and practice good judgment to ensure high quality care for all patients and request assistance when needed.
  • Desire to teach 4th year veterinary students.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience as a veterinary technician in a clinical setting; preferably at a teaching hospital.
Required License or Certification
  • Licensed/Registered/Certified by any state.
  • Graduation from an AVMA fully accredited two- or four-year Veterinary Technician program.
Valid NC Driver's License required No
