We are seeking a Veterinary Assistant  that will function as an assistant to a veterinary technician in the research lab and participate in preparation and execution of large animal experiments and follow-up animal care under the supervision of the Veterinarian, PI, or Veterinary Surgery Technician. The candidate must be able to assist with the setup of animal surgery, prepare linen and instrument packs, and anesthesia charting. The candidate should be capable of assisting with animal restraint and minor procedures, such as intubation and venipuncture. The assistant should be able to help with clerical work such as filing, log keeping, and document editing as assigned.


Major responsibilities:

  • Assist with duties of an operating vet tech assistant, including using physiological monitoring equipment including ECG, blood pressure, ventilator, etc., under supervision.
  • Assist with the restraint of animals, monitoring animals under anesthesia, preparing the imaging scanner rooms for use, preparing instrument packs, setting up animal surgery, performing post-op animal follow-up, and administering medications etc., under supervision.
  • Help archive imaging studies, assist with post-op animal care following procedures including pain management, cleaning, and animal comfort.
  • Maintain inventory and supplies used in the lab, restocking of supplies, and maintain the general cleanliness and organization of the laboratory.
  • Adhere to standards for JHU, JHMI, USDA, and NIH policies.
  • Able to assist in lifting heavy objects and pushing heavy equipment.
  • Assist on occasion with collection of tissues for histopathology, submission of tissue for processing, and limited histopathological staining under supervision.
  • Help other lab members with cell culture techniques and wet chemistry preparations.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or graduation equivalent.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Some knowledge and experience with assisting in veterinary medicine and animal surgery.
  • Should possess some foundation in basic laboratory techniques.
