Veterinary Assistant, Emergency & Critical Care 

The University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine, invites applications for the temporary position of Veterinary Assistant in the Emergency & Critical Care service. The primary purpose of this position is to assist the veterinary technicians, clinicians, and students with patient care of hospitalized critically ill/injured, post-operative and infectious small animal patients. Attend to patient needs such as feeding appropriate diets, walking and husbandry.  Restrain patients for procedures knowing appropriate restraint techniques.  Stock supplies for efficient function of the unit.  Keep ICU and Emergency Triage rooms clean and organized using appropriate techniques for adequate infection control. Required to be on-call on a rotating basis and work some holidays.

 



Qualifications

 

Typical Responsibilities:

         Assist veterinary technicians, clinicians and students with basic nursing care needs of hospitalized patients

         Assess patients for cleanliness and need for care, assist with bathing

         Feed patients appropriate diets, offer water

         Walk patients outside on a scheduled basis

         Stock cabinets and drawers with drugs and supplies

         Restrain patients for medical procedures utilizing proper restraint techniques

         Maintain cleanliness and appropriate disinfection of cages, floors and other surfaces for adequate infection control

         Run basic laboratory tests on hospitalized patients

         Record vital parameters for critical emergency triage patients

         Record CPR parameters during codes

         Make saline and heparinized saline syringes for ICU and ER use

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent with 6 months of experience working as a veterinary assistant at UTVMC or equivalent.  Previously experience with handling dogs and cats in a veterinary setting.

Preferred Qualifications:

1-2 years of experience working as a veterinary assistant in a private practice setting.
