Job Summary
This position assists Red Butte Garden’s Conservation and Research department with ex situ conservation of seeds collected from threatened and endangered plant species in Utah. The project will involve bringing the seed collection up to date in terms of accuracy and completeness, housed in a comprehensive relational database, and develop a plan for next steps with the seed banking program, including prioritization of future seed collections, germination trials, and research needs.
Responsibilities
· Database Development and Management: checking and updating the long-term seed bank records and preparing them for import into the Garden’s BRAHMS central seed conservation database.
· Seed Collections: may work on new seed collections in the field, either using plants growing in the Garden or in situ at locations around the state. Seed collection trips may involve travel, overnight stays (possibly tent camping), physical work and hiking to remote locations, and being outdoors for long hours in the desert summer. Includes processing the seed back in the lab, cleaning, drying, counting seed, data collection, and record-keeping.
· Lab Skills in Rare Seed Management and Testing: testing the viability of stored seeds and developing germination protocols for different species, which are often difficult to germinate.
· Program Management and Planning: develop a plan for ongoing management of the seed collection, including future collections and seed testing.
