Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
Facilities Operations has the responsibility of providing a wide range of services to all administrative departments, student programs, and all academic schools and departments. Services include all aspects of corrective and preventive maintenance, operations, grounds maintenance, housekeeping, utility infrastructure maintenance and operations, business operations, safety, regulatory compliance, project management, and renovations. These duties are conducted for a campus consisting of over 100 buildings totaling 6 million gross square feet on over 275 acres.
Position Summary
The primary purpose of this position is to observe, monitor, operate, or supervise the operation of one 40,000-pound-per-hour and three 50,000-pound-per-hour boilers and all related boiler plant machinery on designated shifts. Supervise or operate the Computerized Boiler Control System, corrective and preventive maintenance as required, to ensure a smooth and constant flow of steam to the campus around the clock. Supervise or conduct preventative and corrective maintenance on the campus steam and condensate distribution systems as required. An additional major purpose of this position is the monitoring, testing, and treatment of boiler water, feedwater, and condensate to prevent damage to equipment due to corrosion, scale, and/or solids in the system. A secondary responsibility is the operation and maintenance of three additional hot water satellite boilers located in various campus buildings. Conduct training of Plant Operators on all phases of operation and maintenance.
  • Supervise and/or operate plant – 20%
  • Supervise and/or perform chemical tests and water treatment as required – 18%
  • Supervise and/or record log readings at 4-hour intervals and ensure inspection of operation equipment is performed hourly – 15%
  • Supervise and/or conduct preventative and corrective maintenance on a designated shift – 12%
  • Supervise and/or conduct inspections of operations and stand-by equipment on a designated shift – 10%
  • Supervise and/or conduct boiler system blowdowns and LWCO tests on a designated shift – 10%
  • Supervise the preparation of boiler and pressure vessels for inspection by insurance company – 10%
  • Supervise and/or perform fuel oil handling and use (when burning oil) – 5%

This position is a mandatory essential position, as defined in the Adverse Weather and Emergency Event Policy.
Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalency and four (4) years of experience in applicable utility operations, of which one (1) year is supervisory; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Certifications may be required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Must have prior experience with industrial boilers. 
  • Preferred experience with computers, plumbing, electrical, and control wiring.
