Description of Duties and Tasks
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Plans and coordinates all education program activities, including scheduling and teaching classes; scheduling volunteers and outside agencies to facilitate classes, organizing attendance at other educational fairs and events; developing and updating lesson plans.
  • Works to identify agencies and community service providers to make presentations and/or support outreach activities; coordinates and schedules volunteers as necessary to conduct financial education or other seminars; builds relationships with local college career placement teams and local vocational school programs.
  • Recruits, identifies, delivers and documents services and activities to meet the needs of all assigned program participants.
  • Provides one-on-one assistance to students concerning college admissions processes, financial aid, career and academic issues.
  • Conducts college/career workshops for students and parents.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with parents, schools, and other service providers.
  • Tracks assigned participants from program entry through high school graduation to ensure post-secondary enrollment.
  • Records and enters student demographic and contact information in the program database.
  • Coordinates the collection of data and submits related reports.
  • Establishes and maintains participant data in hard copy files and electronic files.
  • Creates participant hard files with the required documentation.

Knowledge
Must possess required knowledge and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge and experience in the college and financial aid application process.
  • Knowledge of computer technology and applications.
  • Knowledge and ability to exercise strong planning and organizational abilities, excellent documentation skills and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge and ability to exercise strong verbal, writing, and communication skills.
  • Ability to display sensitivity to the educational and psychological issues affecting low-income, potential first-generation college-bound youth and indicate either professional or personal experience in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the target population.
  • Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail with constant breaks in concentration associated with answering phones.
  • Knowledge of student and work-related information and materials such as Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), confidential electronic records, and legislative guidelines related to these records.

  • Maintaining an established work schedule, to include some evenings and weekends.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of student and other work related information.
  • Ability to recruit students, and to review, analyze, and evaluate program applications.
  • Ability to effectively manage a caseload of students.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
  • Collaborative and effective team member and team builder.
  • Ability to establish rapport with high school students form diverse ethnic/racial backgrounds.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, counseling, communication, organization, and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to assist with planning, development, implementation and evaluation of outreach programming on mental health and wellness topics.
  • Strong organizational, detail-oriented, multi-tasking and coordinating skills.
  • Maintaining an established work schedule.


Technology Skills

  • Use a variety of spreadsheet, word processing, database and presentation software.
  • Use a variety of social media and webpage schedule.


Required Work Experience

  • Two years related work experience.


Preferred Work Experience

  • Life experience with barriers similar to those from TRIO target populations, including but not limited to, being a member of an underrepresented group in higher education, being a first generation student, being from a low income family, or having a disability.
  • Experience providing individualized counseling to high school or college students, including assisting students with course selection, financial aid, and college enrollment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting the academic needs of students facing barriers to educational success through academic coaching/advising, counseling, instruction, advocacy, and/or education.


Required Education

  • Bachelor's degree.


Preferred Education

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.


Special Requirements
Licenses/Certifications; Other

  • Valid Texas driver's license and reliable transportation for local area travel.
  • Ability to conduct remote counseling 95 % of time.
  • Ability to conduct face to face counseling  5% of time.


Physical Requirements

  • Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, kneeling, pushing, and pulling.
  • Occasional lifting of objects up to 20 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Work is performed in a variety of settings including in-studio, on-location, and standard office environment.

  • Work safely and follow safety rules. Report unsafe working conditions and behavior. Take reasonable and prudent actions to prevent others from engaging in unsafe practices.

Pay Rate

$30.40/hour
