Available positions: Instructors and Residential Mentors. 
Upward Bound provides an intensive summer residential program on the USD campus.  High school participants will receive: 1) instruction in composition, literature, world languages, math, ACT Prep and lab sciences; 2) advising in educational and career opportunities; 3) exposure to enrichment activities designed to promote personal and social growth.
The Upward Bound (UB) Program at USD is funded by the U.S. Department of Education. It is designed to generate the academic skills and motivation necessary for success in postsecondary education. UB Participants are talented high school students from South Dakota.

Residential Mentors:
· Promote the educational aspirations and performance of program participants by modelling excellent college-going attitudes, habits, and skills
· Lead small groups, plan and facilitate educational, cultural, and recreational events
· Maintain professional working relationships among UB and USD personnel
· Promote a community of mutual respect and trust at all times
· Supervise students’ free time
· Handle routine discipline issues
· Provide tutoring and advising to individuals and groups of students
Instructors:
· Provide instruction in: Science, Math, Reading, Composition, ACT prep, Mental Health, College Scholarship search, Study Skills, Leadership, Civic Engagement, among others
· Promote the educational aspirations and performance of program participants by modelling excellent college-going attitudes, habits, and skills
· Maintain professional working relationships among UB and USD personnel
· Promote a community of mutual respect and trust at all times
· Provide tutoring and advising to individuals and groups of students
Requirements

· Enrolled or graduated college/graduate students, successfully completed at least a year of college
· Experience supervising, mentoring, and/or teaching 9th-12th graders
· Proof of valid driver’s license and willingness to share driving responsibilities
· For mentors: ability to reside on campus for the duration of the program including pre-program training and post-program debrief, including weekends
Preferred Skills

· Experience leading small groups and/or tutoring
· Experience with the UB program and demographic – high school students from rural and/or underserved South Dakota communities, including Native American reservations
All applicants should clearly demonstrate: experience with, and commitment to, underrepresented, ethnically diverse and low income/first generation college-bound youth, as well as relevant expertise. Applicants must be able to maintain professional working relationships and be available for program events including mandatory staff training, daily staff meetings, facilitation of afternoon, evening and weekend activities and study sessions. 
This is a full-time position and other employment or taking summer classes during the program is not recommended.

Room and board for the duration of the program is included for residential staff.
