Position Overview

The position involves coordinating the integration of the University of Kansas Upward Bound Program's Summer Institute with the funding and objectives of AEOP Unite, a pre-collegiate summer program focusing on STEM for underrepresented groups. This collaboration aims to offer an intensive six-week academic experience tailored to first-generation and low-income college-bound students, enhancing their readiness for high school completion and college graduation while providing exposure to STEM fields and college life.

The Unite TA will assist to develop and implement a hands-on STEM curriculum while serving as a role model for high school students participating in the Upward Bound Non-Bridge Summer Institute. Classes are scheduled to take place from Monday to Thursday, spanning June 10 to July 3, 2024. An orientation for instructors is tentatively scheduled for May 16, 2024. These positions are on-going temporary summer appointments.

The University of Kansas Upward Bound programs are federally funded TRIO programs that work with first-generation and low-income college-bound students (rising 9th – rising 12th graders) in Shawnee, Douglas, Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties with the goal of increasing the rate at which students complete high school and graduate from college. The Upward Bound Non-Bridge Summer Institute is an intensive six-week academic program that gives participants a chance to experience college life while preparing for their upcoming school year.

Unite is a pre-collegiate summer program for talented high school students from groups historically underserved in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
An initiative of the Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP), Unite is administered by the Technology Student Association (TSA). TSA is a member of the AEOP Consortium formed by the AEOP cooperative agreement award (W911SR-15-2-0001), a group of education organizations that oversee STEM programs designed to support the goals and mission of the AEOP. The lead organization for the consortium is Battelle Memorial Institute, a non-profit research and development organization with a strong commitment to STEM education.


Job Description

55% - Instruction

  • Develop a thorough understanding of the project's overall goals and assist with a challenging program of study that will promote success and generate confidence within each student.
  • Aid the instructor in the development and implementation of STEM content-area curriculum/lesson plans.
  • Provide instruction for hands-on STEM activities as needed.
  • Reinforce STEM AEOP opportunities available to students.
  • Assist in identifying opportunities for STEM events that are available and relevant to instructions and classroom activities.
20% - Administration
  • Complete add administrative tasks fully and punctually.
  • Grad any assigned work and complete weekly progress reports and final grade reports for each student.
  • Always maintain sensitive student information.
  • Read and respond to all communication, stay up to date on changes in schedules.
  • Maintain accurate participant attendance records.
  • Must attend training prior to program and weekly staff meetings as required.
  • Be flexible and willing to do other duties as assigned.
10% - Community Development
  • Communicate respectfully and effectively with students, permanent staff, and fellow staff members.
  • Develop positive and supportive relationships with all students.
  • Establish and atmosphere that appreciate all student identities, cultures, and beliefs.
10% - Policy Enforcement
  • Model and enforce all university and program policies.
  • Respond promptly to student issues, conflicts, mediations needs, and crisis situations and report to appropriate staff.
  • Document all policy violations consistently.
5% - Other duties as assigned

Position Requirements

On-site: The format of this work may change depending on state, university, and local regulations regarding Covid-19. 


Required Qualifications

  • 30+ undergraduate hours by the end of spring 2024 semester.
  • Candidate must have strong commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in education as outlined in application materials.
  • Available to teach June 10 - July 3, Monday - Thursday.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate credit or degree.
  • STEM teaching expertise and experience.
  • Experience with culturally diverse students.
  • Experience with Federal TRIO Programs and/or first-generation college students.
