DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Department of Urban Studies and Planning (formerly the Urban Studies and Planning Program) is the School of Social Sciences' newest and fastest-growing department. It builds on the 40 years of success and history of the USP Program as one of UC San Diego's leading interdisciplinary programs, which is widely acknowledged as one of the best of its kind in the nation based on the caliber of its faculty and alumni.

USP is an undergraduate community of students with diverse interests and goals. The Department provides students with a variety of approaches and tools to understand the development, character, and culture of cities and communities. USP draws from the social sciences, arts and humanities, physical and life sciences, management and information sciences. Two undergraduate degrees are offered in USP: the B.A. in Urban Studies and Planning and the B.S. in Real Estate and Development. USP faculty and students have deep connections and collaborate frequently with community and industry partners. The Department anticipates rapid faculty growth, addition of new graduate programs, and continued increase in undergraduate student enrollments in the coming years.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Under general direction of USP's Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), the Undergraduate Student Services Advisor is responsible for all aspects of the day-to-day management of the undergraduate student affairs activities for USP. Responsibilities include: academic advising, coordinating all student-related activities, providing student services, performing outreach and recruitment, developing curriculum plans, scheduling courses, maintaining undergraduate publications (General Catalog and program web page), and management and implementation of hiring of Teaching Assistants for USP courses. The SSA will also serve as the primary contact for office walk-ins and phone calls for the program, and be a key advisor to the USP Department Chair, USP Program Director, CAO and faculty in short- and long-range program planning.

Occasional overtime including evenings and weekends may be required.

  • Experience and knowledge of advising and counseling techniques in a University (or similar) setting.

  • Knowledge of University processes, procedures, rules and regulations relating to academic affairs, the college system, undergraduate admissions, and student services.

  • Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and pertinent databases.

  • Skill to use computers and various software to include spreadsheets, database, word processors, and online and/or web-based applications.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to present data in a logical, concise format and convey recommendations. Excellent written communication skills for general correspondence and publications (detailed information materials, handbooks, newsletter articles, etc.).

  • Experience working productively and cooperatively as an effective team member. Ability to work collaboratively with staff, faculty and students.

  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex policies and regulations and apply them where applicable, as well as communicate them.

  • Ability to multi-task, balance multiple, often conflicting, priorities with deadline constraints and frequent interruptions.

  • Skills in service orientation, organization, active listening, and critical thinking.

  • Ability to independently problem solve, reason, exercise sound judgment and take initiative.

  • Strong organizational skills with accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to develop and accurately maintain records, files, and schedules, and improve ways of organizing materials and streamlining processes.

  • Ability to provide close supervision to undergraduate employee(s).

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $52,100 - $87,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $24.95 - $42.10

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
