Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
This is a full-time, professional academic advising and program coordinator position in the Department of Government and Politics. The Government and Politics major is one of the largest on campus, serving over 1,000 students. The person in this position:
  • Advises undergraduates on degree requirements, academic policies, course selection, experiential learning opportunities (e.g., internships and research opportunities), and post-graduation planning.
  • Conducts academic audits and degree clearances.
  • Maintains accurate advising-related records, including student files, training manuals, forms, and course syllabi.
  • Ensures accuracy of information published on undergraduate websites.
  • Delivers new student orientation and academic planning presentations.
  • Coordinates experiential learning opportunities.
  • Coordinates the GVPT Undergraduate Research Program.
  • Coordinates undergraduate off-campus conference participation for GVPT students.
  • Plans and implements communication strategies to effectively relay information to students.
  • Utilizes databases to compile statistical profiles of students.
  • Provides guidance to students with planning and researching co-curricular opportunities such as study abroad.
  • Monitors and ensures student enrollment and faculty grade submission for students each term; conducts research and resolves issues involving academic difficulty and grading issues.
  • Assists with the hiring, scheduling, and training of student workers.
  • Assists with onsite and virtual special events including visitor days, orientation, special seminars, Commencement ceremonies, Maryland Day, etc.
  • Assumes other duties as assigned by the Advising Manager, Associate Director, and Director of Undergraduate Studies.

MIDCM and ENSP programs:
The Advisor in this position is also the primary point of contact for Environmental Politics and Policy (ENSP) and manages the Minor in International Development Conflict Management (MIDCM) programs, carrying out complex analysis to support optimal course offerings for undergraduate degree seekers in all terms. The advisor in this position serves as the primary academic advisor for both programs and performs duties including completing academic audits, graduation clearance, curricular and co-curricular advising, post-graduation planning, and maintaining student records. Additional responsibilities for MIDCM programs include teaching a practicum course, managing the application and admissions cycles, and coordinating with program faculty to ensure smooth functioning of the program.
The person in this position must be able to exercise independent decision-making and reporting to multiple constituents. Occasional travel, evening and weekend hours may be required.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree.

Experience:
  • Two years of experience in academic advising required.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong organizational, administrative, interpersonal, and communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to self-direct and problem solve is necessary. 
  • Must be proficient in general office software (including word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and web-based applications). 
  • Customer-service oriented attitude and professional demeanor is expected. Ability to work evening or weekend events as needed.
Preferences:
Preferences:
  • Master’s degree in higher/education, student affairs, communications, or other related field.
  • Two years of experience in academic advising preferably in a University setting. 
  • Background in political science/international relations, although not required, is useful.
  • Knowledge of academic advising strategies. 
  • Knowledge of University of Maryland, College Park requirements, policies, and information management systems.
  • Strong assessment, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills (both written and verbal). 
  • Experience with Adobe software and advanced computer literacy skills are desirable. 
  • Self-motivation and care about the educational field.

 Anticipated hiring range is $57,000 – $70,000.

Physical Demands
Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Repetitive motion. Substantial movement of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading. Must have the ability to lift and small carry parcels, packages and other items, and to walk short distances to deliver and pick up materials.
