Job Summary

The Undergraduate Academic Advisor will provide academic and career advising for undergraduate psychology majors and minors as part of advising team; assists with recruitment, orientation, enrollment management, and retention efforts, as well as department events. Participates in undergraduate administrative planning and supports student success; helps resolve registration issues for students in all Psychology courses; may support other units in the college as needed.

The Department of Psychology houses a Bachelor’s program in psychology, a Master’s in Clinical Counseling Psychology program, a Master’s in Psychology program with four sequences, a Specialist in School Psychology program, and a PhD in School Psychology program. We have approximately 850 majors and 450 minors, along with 100 graduate students. There is also a large General Education commitment, serving students from all over campus.


Salary Rate / Pay Rate

Pay is commensurate with qualifications and experience, combined with an excellent benefits package


Required Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s Degree.
2. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
3. Ability to make effective public presentations.
4. Excellent interpersonal skills to work with students, faculty, staff and alumni.
5. Ability to multi-task and produce quality work under deadlines.
6. Strong organizational skills.
7. Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, including the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with a diverse population of students, peers, and the public.
8. Working knowledge of basic office software and advising systems (e.g., word processing, e-mail systems, spreadsheets, databases, student information systems).
9. Evidence of a positive professional demeanor that contributes to a positive and fulfilling work environment.
10. Evidence of understand of the issues facing today’s college students as it impacts their academic careers.
11. Valid driver’s license.


Preferred Qualifications

1. Master’s degree.
2. Training or experience in psychology or another field related to the position.
3. Experience with academic and career counseling.
4. Previous teaching experience at the college level.


Work Hours

Generally Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm with occasional weekend and evening hours as business needs dictate. This position offers the possibility of part-time hybrid work depending on the needs of the department. All work under this appointment is required to be performed from within the State of Illinois. Illinois State University does not authorize out-of-state work.


Functional Expectations

Must be able to complete the following with or without a reasonable accommodation:

3. Effectively communicate on a daily basis
