Summary

This is a hybrid position, offering a blend of remote and in-person work, Monday-Friday.

The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is responsible for the independent operation of sonographic equipment, and for performing and communicating results of diagnostic   examinations using sonography.

The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is responsible for daily operations of the sonographic department, patient schedule, equipment maintenance, the report of equipment failures, and quality assessment (QA). The sonographer always maintains a high standard of medical ethics and is self-motivated to increase level of understanding and knowledge of the field, diseases, and new procedures as they evolve.


Responsibilities*

Scope:

Provides health care services, utilizing the knowledge of Ultrasound to ensure order accuracy and proper scheduling. The QC technologist will serve as a liaison between schedulers, technologists, ordering providers, Manager, and Supervisor to establish appropriate Ultrasound outpatient scheduling. Outpatient schedules will be monitored for scheduling errors due to order inaccuracy, erroneous locations, or improper time allotment. Exercises professional judgment in performance of services and maintains a demeanor complementary to medical ethics.

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

  • The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is responsible for the independent operation of sonographic equipment, and for performing and communicating results of diagnostic examinations using sonography.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Work with clerical staff to ensure the patient's Ultrasound is scheduled correctly with the proper order, length of time, and location.
  • Review scheduling grids to ensure Ultrasound orders and appointments are scheduled accurately.
  • Review electronic orders daily.
  • Supply provider education on Ultrasound order requirements as needed.
  • Resolve errors in cooperation with Manager, Supervisor, Lead Technologists, clerical core group and Call Center representatives as appropriate. Offer coaching to negate future occurrences.
  • Initiate contact with ordering providers, clinics, and patients for order clarification.
  • Serve as a role model for the staff and provide leadership for the team.
  • Understand the global scope of the Ultrasound operation and make proactive recommendations to manager for process improvements.
  • Be a part of the team building process and work effectively with team members.
  • Maintain clear and complete documentation of all communications.
  • Monitor the Ultrasound chat groups for clerical scheduling questions.
  • If requested, assist in resolving incorrect exam coding and submitting tickets for scheduling guide and decision tree updates.
  • Perform support duties as directed by Ultrasound Manager and/or Supervisor.
  • Attend necessary meetings directed by Ultrasound leadership.
  • Perform Ultrasound exams in times of short staffing if needed.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

  • General supervision is received from the Ultrasound Manager and/or Supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent communication, organization, and documentation skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and coaching skills.
  • Extreme attention to detail is required.
  • Ability to follow guidance, take initiative, self-start, and work without direct supervision.
  • Capacity to multi-task.
  • Proven ability to foster and work in a team environment.
  • Proficient technical knowledge and competence to ensure outpatient orders are correct and scheduled appropriately.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT

The employee must be physically capable of carrying out all assigned duties:

  • Emotional and physical health sufficient to meet the demands of the position.
  • Strength sufficient to lift some patients and linen bags, move heavy equipment on wheels (up to approximately 500 lbs.), and to move patients in wheelchairs and stretchers.
  • Ability to maintain prolonged arm positions necessary for scanning.  Maintain awkward scanning, sitting, and standing positions for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to operate and use multiple computer programs in an efficient manner.
  • Ability to concentrate and focus attention, thoughts and efforts on patients and equipment for varying periods of time.

RISK OF EXPOSURE TO BLOOD BORNE PATHOGENS

  • Category I Tasks involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues.

Required Qualifications*

Education:

  • Graduate of a formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) is required.

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Registration with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers is necessary within 6 months of hire date.
  • Certification of Abdomen and OB-GYN is required within 12 months of hire date.
  • This classification requires Primary Source Verification.

Desired Qualifications*
  • Some knowledge of human anatomy is desirable.
  • 1-year Inpatient hospital environment.
  • MSK registered.

Work Schedule

40 hour/week day position, Monday-Friday.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
