TUTOR - CHEMISTRY (FULL-TIME)
CITY COLLEGES OF CHICAGO - MALCOLM X COLLEGE

Malcolm X College is seeking a Full-Time Chemistry Tutor. Reporting to the Director of Academic Support Services, or an administrator filling the role of the Director of Academic Support Services, a Full-Time Tutor is responsible for providing students with tutoring and instructional support in an academic or occupational area of study to help improve their academic capabilities and progress academically, while promoting independent learning and self-reliance.

Tutors assist tutees in developing and improving their competency in course work; and help students integrate and apply effective study skills, active reading and note-taking, test-taking strategies, skills for using educational technology and computers, and time management and organizational skills to their specific courses.

Tutors work with students in various programs across the colleges, providing individual and small group tutoring in math, reading, writing, English, and other subject areas. Tutors provide in-person and online tutoring services to any currently enrolled student. Tutors may also serve as embedded tutors within courses. Performs related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Tutoring

  • Provides academic assistance in tutoring students on an individual or group basis on a wide range of subjects in an academic or occupational area.
  • Tutors students to help them gain a deeper comprehension of course materials and a better understanding of work assignments to improve their academic success.
  • Crafts effective tutoring plans to address tutee’s weaknesses and strengths; motivates students and provides them with confidence to feel successful.
  • Provides students with skills for using educational technology and computers, relevant to their area of expertise or required for the course work they support within that expertise, to improve the student’s academic capabilities.
  • Assists students in problem solving and applying critical thinking techniques in the context of a specific discipline or subject area.
  • Helps students develop positive attitudes and a high level of motivation towards learning and studying, build self-confidence, and reduce anxiety or fear of failure in academic work.
  • Tutors students and provides them with strategies to develop effective study habits and skills to improve academic capabilities.
  • Prepares students for standardized testing, which can include CCC placement assessments, and provides strategies to overcome test anxiety.
  • Participates in tutor orientation and attends professional development and training sessions to increase competency in subject areas and improve tutoring skills.
  • Maintains records on tutoring activities within Navigate or other CCC student success platform.

 

Embedded Tutoring

  • Supports the class Instructor as an embedded tutor, pro-actively engaging students in     learning exercises, monitoring students’ level of comprehension, and assisting students in the class struggling with materials and course content.
  • Meets with the Instructor to discuss implementation and use of lesson plans, review feedback on learning activities, and assess students’ progress and challenges in the classroom.
  • Conducts in-class presentations on various strategies to improve academic capabilities including study and note-taking skills, reading comprehension skills, and writing skills, as well as other skills relevant to the embedded class but within the tutor’s area of expertise.

 

Department Work

  • Schedules individual tutoring sessions, at their home college, based on students’ requests for tutoring in a specific subject area, course or discipline.
  • May schedule and perform class visits to present and share information about current tutoring services. Offers class tours of the tutoring center(s) and assists with other marketing and outreach efforts for tutoring, alongside the coordinator(s), such as campus events.
  • May review policies and procedures proposed by the Director and coordinator(s) related to tutoring services and tutoring experiences to help insure a consistent and desirable student experience and alignment with the tutor’s areas of expertise
  • Assists with the design and delivery of presentations and training resources for tutor professional development as relevant to areas of expertise, which may include research and sharing of knowledge on best practices in tutoring
  • Assists Coordinator(s) with the development of student-focused study guides, student-focused workshops, and/or other materials to support student academic success used in the course of services provided by ASC tutoring staff
  • Provides periodic evaluations of patterns in students’ learning needs and suggests areas where tutoring professional development would be productive, based on areas of expertise and in consultation with Academic Support Center coordinators and managers. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university in a field of study and subject area related to the subject(s) being tutored, OR similar technical certifications and training. For Colleges hiring a dynamic full-time tutor to provide services for more than one discipline, or area of need, additional degrees OR certifications and training, specific to all areas of need may be required.
  • Completion of tutoring certification preferred.
  • Experience in teaching, tutoring, or delivering academic support to students at the post- secondary instructional level is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to provide tutoring in multiple disciplines is highly desired, including proficiency in languages other than English.
  • Experience working in a large, urban community college environment with a diverse    cultural and ethnic student body is highly desirable.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Zoom
  • Proficiency in the subject area(s) to be tutored
  • High degree of proficiency in using Zoom and educational technologies including learning management systems
  • High degree of proficiency in creating learning and study resources for students at a range of skill levels
  • Knowledge of effective tutoring techniques and strategies in subject area(s)
  • Knowledge of tutoring strategies used for improving student study skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work within a culturally diverse environment
  • Ability to interact effectively with students and to motivate students to succeed
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and thoroughness in completing work tasks
  • Ability to fulfill obligations with demonstrated reliability, responsibility, and dependability
  • Demonstrated flexibility in willingness and motivation to assist students of varying backgrounds, academic levels, skills, areas of study, using various modalities to accommodate changing schedules and priorities based on student and department needs.
