Working Title TRIO-Student Support Services Advisor
Brief Summary of Job Description
The TRIO-Student Support Services program serves students who meet one or more of the following eligibility requirements; are first-generation, meet Federal income requirements, or have a documented disability. The TRIO-SSS Advisor assists with coordinating direct and indirect support services to ensure the academic success, retention, and graduation of TRIO-SSS students as stipulated in the UNK US Department of Education TRIO/Student Support Services (SSS) grant. This position may teach Foundations for Learning courses. That course assists students with the transition from high school to college. The advisor also functions as the primary liaison between the TRIO-SSS program and Disability Services for Students (DSS). This is a TRIO-Student Support Services grant position that is federally funded through August 31, 2025. The TRIO-SSS grant runs on a 5-year cycle and UNK has maintained the TRIO-SSS grant continuously since 1993. UNK is currently in the process of writing the grant proposal for the next 5-year cycle.
Job Duties
  • Provide primary and secondary academic advising to TRIO participants
  • Support compliance for grant regulations
  • Monitor academic progress of assigned TRIO participants
  • Provide academic advising during New Student Enrollment for admitted students who are TRIO program eligible
  • Provide appropriate referrals to DSS and other supplemental support services to ensure student academic success, retention, and graduation as stipulated in the US Department of Education TRIO-SSS grant
  • As primary liaison between TRIO-SSS and DSS, keep other TRIO staff up to date on DSS policies and processes
  • Plan and conduct other support services for TRIO-SSS students such as financial aid and scholarship assistance, financial literacy education, peer advisor programs, and career and graduate school planning; as stipulated in the US Department of Education TRIO-SSS grant
  • Read, analyze, and apply information from guiding documents, such as the TRIO grant, federal funding laws, etc.
  • Assist with data collection and information gathering for the Annual Performance Review (APR) report, federal grant applications, and other reports
  • Assist with updating written intervention materials, and implement initiatives, as stipulated in the US Department of Education TRIO-SSS grant.
  • Attend TRIO-SSS program trainings and professional development opportunities
  • Provide academic and career/life advising
  • Plan, coordinate, conduct, and evaluate TRIO-SSS required and permissible supportive activities as stipulated in the Department of Education TRIO-SSS grant.
  • Coordinate assessment meant to identify student need for support
  • Assist Senior TRIO-SSS Advisor with aspects of the TRIO-SSS peer mentoring program
  • Other TRIO-SSS activities as required
  • Prepare and submit accurate and timely reports
  • Identify potential TRIO-SSS participants and/or evaluate students who have been referred to TRIO-SSS
  • Prepare and maintain program participant documentation
  • Develop and maintain positive and collaborative working relationships with campus, University and community constituents
  • Responsible for ongoing professional development and participation in professional organizations
  • Promote self-advocacy awareness for students
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in education, family science, psychology, social work, counseling, or other appropriate area
  • Excellent interpersonal skills required to work effectively with students.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills needed to work with faculty and other campus entities
  • Ability to relate to college students and sincere interest in helping students from underrepresented backgrounds
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively initiate, coordinate, implement, and assess programs and activities
  • Ability to read, analyze, and apply information from guiding documents, such as the TRIO grant, and federal funding laws
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree
  • Previous experience providing academic advising, career planning, and other services to students of diverse backgrounds, including those with disabilities
  • Previous experience teaching, particularly related to academic success strategies and financial literacy
  • Prior experience working with TRIO or a similar program targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and/or individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline
Physical Demands
Schedule M-F, 8am-5pm with occassional evenings/weekends
