Theoretical and Numerical Study on Magnetorotational Instability Intern
US-NJ-Princeton
Job ID: 2024-19106
Type: Temporary
# of Openings: 1
Category: Research and Laboratory
Princeton University
Overview
The MRI-group is seeking for a motivated and self-funded undergraduate to join us to conduct theoretical linear analysis and numerical nonlinear simulation of the stand version of magnetorotationa instablity (SMRI), a unique MHD instability that is widely regarded as the most likely cause of turbulence driving accretion onto compact astronomical objects, from protostars to black holes. Our group recently identified a novel MHD mode in our liquid-metal experiments and simulations that resembs the characteristics of SMRI, which however surprisingly breaks the rotational symmetry that the system perserves.
We are now using theoretical and numerical tools to try to understand the origin of this non-axisymmetric mode in our system, and the successful candidate (self-funded is required) will work on this topic with mentors who are experts in theory, numerical simulations and experiments.
Justification: Interns should be self-funded and highly motivated, with undergraduate students preferred. The intern will learn the basic ideas of instabiliy and SMRI, advanced scientific computing, data analysis, various presenting skills for scientific research.
A proud U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratory managed by Princeton University, Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) is a longstanding leader in the science and innovation behind the development of fusion energy â” a clean, safe, and virtually limitless energy source. With an eye on the future and in response to national priorities, PPPL also has begun a strategic shift from a singular focus on fusion energy to a multi-focus approach that includes microelectronics, quantum information science, and sustainability science. Whether it be through science, engineering, technology or professional services, every team member has an opportunity to make their mark on our world. PPPL aims to attract and support people with a rich variety of backgrounds, interests, experiences, and cultural viewpoints. We are committed to equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility and believe that each member of our team contributes to our scientific mission in their own unique way. Come join us!
Responsibilities
Core Duties
- Derive linear perturbation analysis and use Dedalus code to numercially solve the eigenvalue problem;
- Perform nonlinear MHD simulations using SFEMaNS code to provide corss-validation for the linear analysis;
- Perform data analysis including conducting Fourier analysis, plotting figures, and write an intership report.
- The successful candidate will be conducting theoretical analysis using Dedalus code and nonlinear simulations using SFEMaNS code to study the magnetorotational instability in rotating shear mhd flows.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Undergraduate student
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge on fluid mechanics, and general scientific computing software like Python/MATLAB. Candidates who are familiar with the specific code we are working with (Dedalus and SFEMaNS) are highly preferred.
Working Conditions
- The student should be self-funded: PPPL does not pay the student during the internship. This will require proof of compensation and/or letter of agreement from the funding institution.
Princeton University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
