Position Summary

The University of New Mexico, Office of the University Controller, also known as Financial Services, located on Main Campus is responsible for all central accounting functions for the University.

It is the responsibility of the Controller's Office to ensure compliance with all financial policies, rules, and regulations adopted by the University or imposed by external agencies, including state and federal audit requirements, following generally accepted accounting practices. Additionally, the Organization oversees the maintenance of the official financial records of the University.

The Bursar's Office in Financial Services is looking for a Supervisor, Fiscal Services. This includes both Student Accounting and the Cashier Department. It serves the entire University, including main, branch, and HSC campuses with the primary focus on customer service. Student Accounting is responsible for tuition and fee assessment, processing of all electronic and hard-copy statements, refunding of financial aid, reconciliation of loan funds, assisting students with questions concerning their accounts and the collection of outstanding debt. Over $181 million in tuition and fee revenue is processed through this office. Additionally, approximately 63,000 financial aid refunds totaling over $93 million are processed. The Bursar's/Cashier's Office is held to high standards of confidentiality under FERPA, as well as UNM policy, U.S. military policies surrounding grants, IRS, and numerous other agencies, governmental and private.

The department seeks an energetic, professional, highly skilled accountant to serve as Supervisor of Fiscal Services for Student Accounting. The top candidate will provide oversight of design and implementation of financial/accounting systems and reports as well as direction, leadership, and oversight for the Bursar’s Office. Responsibilities include but are not limited to management, control, data analysis, tuition remission, collections handling, third-party billing, bad debt calculation, and all aspects of customer service with regard to accounts receivable for students, faculty, staff, retirees, third-party agencies, and internal departments. The successful candidate will be responsible for ongoing improvements in system upgrades, workflow, and fiscal responsibility in the collection of receivables without impeding the UNM Mission or service to students. The position requires an in-depth understanding of all aspects of the Bursar’s Office and the Banner Student Accounts Receivable system.

The successful candidate must have some experience with human resources management, to include recruitment efforts performance reviews, and an understanding of performance management such as coaching, discipline, and other employee relations matters with oversight from the HR Manager of Financial Services. This position will supervise technical and professional staff. The successful candidate will have highly developed and assertive communication skills.

Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree, successful completion of at least 15 credit hours of university-level accounting through intermediate accounting; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience using broad based computer applications, software packages, LAN, web, etc.
  • Experience using MS Access databases for analysis and reporting
  • Experience using MS Excel spreadsheets for analysis and reporting
  • Experience making presentations to large groups of people
  • Experience using Banner or a similar integrated ERP system
  • Experience working in a team environment, either as a member or as a leader
  • Experience supervising staff (biweekly and monthly)
  • Knowledge and understanding of FERPA
  • Knowledge and understanding of university policies and procedures, applicable local, state, and federal
  • Experience working under pressure and prioritizing work assignments
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience effectively communicating with a wide range of individuals and constituents in a diverse community
