The Pennsylvania State University 2024 Environmental Engineering (EnvE) Faculty Search for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE)

The Penn State Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) and the Institute of Energy and the Environment (IEE) invite applications for a new faculty position in environmental engineering. This tenure-track position will be filled at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level on a 36-week academic year appointment. This position is expected to commence by the Fall of 2024; however, the start date is negotiable.

To complement existing strengths in environmental engineering, the department is actively seeking an exceptional faculty member who has a global perspective for integrating engineering and science to address critical environmental challenges in climate and water quality. The potential beneficial impact of the candidate’s research area to society is more important than the specific topic itself. For example, areas of interest include, but are not limited to, advancing water treatment technologies to promote circularity and reuse, protecting human and ecosystem health from emerging anthropogenic contaminants, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from natural and engineered systems to improve air quality and reverse global warming. The successful candidate will assume a key role in interdisciplinary research collaborations and is co-funded through Penn State’s Institute of Energy and the Environment (IEE). The successful candidate should be a collaborative leader who will promote and enhance excellence and innovation in interdisciplinary research and demonstrate a commitment to inclusive teaching and to promoting a diverse and inclusive engineering community.

Qualifications:

Candidates must have a PhD in Environmental Engineering or a closely related discipline by the appointment start date. The Assistant Professor must have demonstrated ability as a teacher or researcher, and must have shown definite evidence of growth in scholarly or professional achievement. The Associate Professor should possess the same qualifications as the Assistant Professor, but must also provide evidence of an established reputation in scholarly or professional achievement. Candidates must be able to teach core environmental engineering courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate will advise both M.S. and Ph.D. students and develop a high-quality, externally funded, and impactful research program. It is expected that the faculty member will implement ethics, equity, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of their work, while fostering a sense of community in their research group and with their colleagues.

The vision of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Penn State is to achieve the highest quality of life for all through sustainable and resilient civil infrastructure systems. The CEE Department is a vibrant and dynamic unit with 37 faculty members, 17 staff members, more than 400 undergraduate students, and more than 130 graduate students.
