General Information | The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at James Madison University invites applications for a tenure-track position in mathematics or statistics with documented expertise in Research on Undergraduate Mathematics Education (RUME) at the Assistant Professor rank to begin August 2024. Area of specialization is open, but we are particularly interested in candidates whose teaching and research include assessment on improving student learning in undergraduate mathematics or statistics courses. Our energetic, collegial department is home to 55 full-time faculty in the areas of pure mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, and mathematics education. Our programs provide meaningful learning experiences for majors and non-majors alike, both within and outside of the classroom. We care about people and value high-quality undergraduate education. We currently offer Bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics and Statistics, minors in Mathematics, Statistics, and computational analytics, and are the core group offering a minor in Data Science. Scholarship in a variety of forms is supported and valued across all disciplines represented in the department. We have a strong history of supporting undergraduate research, including running a well-established NSF-funded REU program (started in 2002) and hosting a large annual undergraduate research conference (started in 2005). Department faculty are also invested in multiple outreach efforts to the local and disciplinary communities. |
Duties and Responsibilities | The candidate will be committed to developing or continuing a vibrant research program in undergraduate mathematics or statistics education and is able to demonstrate a thorough understanding, evidenced through both application and research, of best practices in assessment and the scholarship of teaching and learning. The successful candidate will be someone who has demonstrated they can help advance student achievement and will be expected to employ their research and teaching efforts to improve teaching and learning within the undergraduate courses in the department.
