Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Theatre Technical Direction and Lighting Design

East Stroudsburg University’s Theatre Department is looking for a Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Theatre Technical Direction and Lighting Design. Located in the beautiful Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, ESU’s proximity to New York City and Philadelphia provides convenient access to professional markets, careers, and social activities. Just minutes from campus are the country’s largest water parks, scenic Delaware Water Gap Recreation Area, Appalachian Trail, and other opportunities for recreational fun. 

The department is looking to welcome a new faculty member specializing in lighting design and/or technical direction. The successful candidate will be involved in program planning and improvement, collaborating with department faculty in curriculum implementation, professional development, and providing support for students and mainstage productions. This individual should be dedicated to teaching, in both traditional classroom settings and in theatre production labs.

The ESU Theatre Department is located in the Fine and Performing Arts building on campus. Our facilities feature multiple performance and rehearsal spaces, with fantastically equipped shops and classroom spaces. We are a collaborative faculty that enjoys working closely together both in the classroom and onstage. ESU’s Theatre, Music, and Dance Department is committed to creating and developing a diverse, engaged, artistically well-balanced body of future theatre professionals, performers, and teachers. The Department offers a BA in Theatre with four areas of concentration: Acting for Theatre, Television, and Film; Musical Theatre; Directing; Design and Technical Theatre.


ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Teaching, advising, and supervising a vibrant community of diverse students.
  • Ability to teach specialized courses in lighting design, lighting technology, projections, stagecraft, technical direction and technical theatre areas as qualified, as well as introductory theatre classes for the general population.
  • Production duties include the practical mentorship of student lighting designers and electricians, directly supervising hang and focus and related equipment for departmental productions.
  • Contributing to productions as a designer and/or technical director.
  • Assisting in the scene shop and providing technical direction support.
  • Assisting in student recruitment.
  • Serving on departmental, college, and university committees.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Terminal degree (MFA or PhD) conferred by August 1, 2024.
  • Record of outstanding teaching, and significant professional experience in theatre design and technology.
  • Commitment to undergraduate education and developing curricula that can meet student needs.
  • Experience working as a theatrical Master Electrician and familiarity with a variety of lighting consoles (ETC preferred).
  • Experience working as a technical director or assistant technical director with a willingness to help collaborate on scenery construction.
