Cornell Lab of Ornithology – Temporary Finance Transaction Specialist

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is the world's leading resource for conservation, research, education, and citizen science focused on birds. The Lab is a vibrant unit within Cornell's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), where full-time faculty and many other renowned professionals direct world-class, mission-driven programs.

What You Will Do

The Finance Transaction Specialist will serve as a key member of the Finance team, keeping our daily operations running smoothly.  Under general supervision and working closely with the team, this individual will have the following responsibilities:

  • Prepare daily advance deposits including preparing manual deposits for international checks and cash donations.

  • Sort and distribute the Lab’s incoming mail on a daily basis,. 

  • Credit Card Transactions - Process credit card payments against the Accounts Receivable balances for various types of invoices (ie. advertising and subscription services).

  • General Ledger Transactions – Prepare and submit transactional documentation to record Membership revenue and other receivable payments.

  • Daily Batching Process – Acquire and compile the necessary supporting documentation daily for transactions for Membership revenue streams.

  • Adjustment Processing - Initiate adjustments for Membership within the Raisers Edge system for chargebacks and foreign currency exchange rates.  Adjustments may also include updating gift fund codes, as needed.

This is a part-time, 19 hours a week, 6-month position (April through October).

What We Need from You

  • Ability to multi-task, problem solve and work independently.

  • Attention to detail and commitment to ensuring data quality and efficiency of processes along with confidentiality requirements.

  • Knowledge of software (MS Excel, Word) and Kuali Financial systems.

  • Proven accuracy working with high volume of credit card, cash and check transactions.

  • Possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple objectives to assist meeting unit goals.

  • Must have excellent customer service skills and demonstrate the ability to communicate with a broad range of people.

  • High School Diploma and 1-2 years accounting experience

  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate degree or equivalent experience. 

  • Additional 1 year accounting and financial experience preferred.

  • Experience with Cornell policies and procedures in the areas of accounting, and accounts payable preferred.

  • Knowledge of Cornell on-line systems:   Kuali Financial Systems, ID&R, Outlook (email and calendaring) preferred.

Pay range for this position is pay range of $20.00 - $21.43 per hour. Work shift can be flexible with the expectation to occur during business hours Monday – Friday.

This position is not benefits eligible.
