Temporary: Department of Art, Design and Theatre - Assistant Costume Shop Manager

Cedarville University seeks a temporary for the Department of Art, Design, and Theatre. The temporary will work eleven weeks per semester, approximately 15 hours per week. This position reports to the Chair of the Department of Art, Design, and Theatre. This temporary position, the Assistant Costume Shop Manager, will work closely with the faculty costume designer/shop manager and will focus on completing tasks as assigned, which includes construction and alterations of costumes as well as preparing for fittings, supervising/training student workers as needed, and staying in close communication with the costume designer/shop manager about all designs and construction projects.  

Responsibilities Include:

• Collaborating with the faculty costume designer/shop manager, delegating specific show assignments, and maintaining deadlines as needed
• Providing leadership and coordinating daily operations of the costume shop
• Discussing each design with the costume designer/shop manager
• Instructing student workers on the accurate construction of costumes when needed
• Constructing and altering costumes as needed
• Assisting in restocking or reorganizing costume storage areas
• Assisting in other shop areas as needed
• Attending all costume shop meetings
• Cleaning and maintaining equipment
• Helping to monitor and stock shop supplies and maintain a safe, clean, and healthy work environment

Position Requirements:

• Advanced apparel sewing skills
• Knowledge of textiles
• Working knowledge of theatre production
• Strong organizational, leadership, communication, and planning skills
• Ability to work productively under time pressures and meet deadlines
• Ability to work around performance schedules, including evenings, weekends, and extended hours when in production
• Ability to perform physical tasks associated with this occupation, including bending, reaching, climbing, walking up and down stairs, and moving objects up to fifty pounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Thorough understanding of the costume design and construction processes, as well as all related aspects of the overall theatre production process.
• Specialized training or experience with tailoring, altering, and original pattern creation.
