Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for a temporary, part-time administrative faculty (Letter of Appointment) position as the Northern Area Central 4-H Camp Director.  The successful applicant will work from home until camp, when they will be expected to stay overnight at camp for the duration of the program. 

Note: The 4-H camp is located in Stateline, NV. The Central 4-H Camp program runs July 13th through July 18th.

Responsibilities

The Camp Director is responsible for the camp program preparations, including but not limited to:

  • Providing input throughout the planning process by attending camp planning meetings

  • Working with staff and volunteers on the planning committee

  • Assisting in the recruitment and screening of chaperones, teen counselors, lifeguards and other camp staff

  • Oversee that all activity centers, evening programs, campfires and open-time activities are planned and that all presenters have gathered supplies

  • Establishing appropriate discipline procedures for disruptive or inappropriate behaviors

  • Being aware of the camp budget procedures, and when possible, encouraging staff and volunteers to obtain donations

It is also the Camp Director’s responsibility to oversee that all day-to-day camp operations and activities run smoothly in conjunction with the Camp Manager.

  • The Director maintains the integrity of the camp program, schedules, activities, and campsite and ensures the camp program is executed in accordance with 4-H and management objectives.

  • The Director makes on-the-spot decisions regarding the dismissal of campers or staff members, cancelation of activities due to inclement weather, when to send an authorized adult chaperone for camp purchases, and setting rules and guidelines for camper and staff safety.

Required Qualifications

  • Candidate must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Recreation, Child Development, Early Childhood Education, Management, Physical Education, Business, Communication, Elementary Education, or other closely related field

Preferred Qualifications

  • Candidate has at least 2 years of experience working with youth, preferably in a camp, outdoor, or educational setting

  • Candidate has excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Candidates with the ability to supervise and organize youth and adults; and plan, originate, organize, and carry out daily and special programs are encouraged to apply

Schedule

Expected hours to work per week: 20 (May through July), except for the actual camp period.

The Camp Director is expected to stay overnight at camp for the duration of the camping program, July 13th – July 18th.

Compensation Grade

LOA Salaried

$17.00 - $20.00 per hour
