Position Overview

Access Management is a unit within Security and Compliance in the department of KU Information Technology. This position works with the daily operation of Access Management and reports to the Account Security Coordinator. In addition, this position provides restricted access to all University of Kansas enterprise systems and services to protect the integrity of the computing environment effecting the university's central academic and administrative databases and systems. This position is responsible for creating, maintaining, and revoking user access accounts to these systems following strict request and approval processes and procedures. In cooperation with security operations staff, this employee will create and maintain procedural documentation for routine activities and automate the processes whenever possible. This position is expected to perform work within the established computer security and system access policies, procedures and standards of KU Information Technology, the University and the State of Kansas. This position is expected to be familiar with all enterprise systems, authentication methods and protocols and to provide information and assistance to users of these systems. These tasks are performed year round and need support at all times. This employee will at all times exercise discretion, good judgment and initiative in completing responsibilities. All ITSO personnel are required to abide by University and Information Services security and network policies, ITSO policies and procedures, and to sign a confidentiality agreement annually.


Job Description

60% - Account Management and Administration

  • Establishes and revokes computer access and grants data access to authorized users on all enterprise systems administered by KU IT, including e-mail, webservers, and databases.
  • Ensures only authorized users can access data and creates, maintains, and monitors all accounts.
  • Monitors and reports system access violations using established policies and procedures to comply with IT and the University of Kansas policies.
  • Maintains distribution lists, accounts, and groups with access to network resources.
20% - Support/Problem Resolution
  • Serves as a resource for university (KU main campus, KUMC, and Regents Center) faculty, staff, students, and departments requesting assistance with security access.
  • Consults one-on-one with faculty, staff, students, and departments on data access issues, passwords, connections, systems software, and general information.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert for technical support staff.
  • Makes referrals to other technical staff as appropriate.
  • Utilizes system documentation and knowledge base content and consults with other IT staff as needed to resolve problems.
20% - Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma and four years of experience OR an Associate's degree and two years of experience OR a Bachelor's degree.
  • Minimum three years' experience providing customer service.
  • Minimum one year experience in creating, maintaining, or revoking user access accounts to computer systems using standard guidelines and procedures.
  • Minimum three years' experience creating and using databases and/or spreadsheets for detailed record keeping.
  • Strong written communication skills as evidenced by application materials.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of command line interfaces.
  • Experience in a higher education environment.
  • Successful completion of at least one formal Customer Service training course.
  • Experience with knowledge bases (development, maintenance, or authoring) or other end-user documentation.
  • Basic network knowledge.
  • Experience with Active Directory and/or LDAP, including creation and management of accounts.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills.
