About SIPS: The CALS School of Integrative of Plant Science (SIPS) encompasses five fields: Horticulture, Plant Biology, Plant Breeding & Genetics, Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology, and Soil and Crop Sciences. Combined there are 100+ faculty, ~200 undergraduate majors, 200+ graduate students in six fields, and 600+ other employees located in Ithaca, Geneva, and other satellite locations across New York State. The School offers the multidisciplinary undergraduate major in the Plant Sciences and is also home to the Agricultural Sciences major. School faculty also contribute to the Biology, Global Development, and Viticulture & Enology majors.

Small Grains Research Program: For more than 100 years, Cornell has been developing innovative approaches to improving small grains. Today, the Small Grains Genetic Research Program uses appropriate technologies encompassing molecular genetics, physiology, pathology, and breeding to research strategies that contribute to the development of superior crop varieties.

Position Summary

This project is a component of an ongoing breeding and genetics research program with activities ranging from basic to applied.

The primary responsibility of this position is the management of a marker-assisted selection breeding project to develop wheat varieties with improved disease, insect and pre-harvest sprouting resistance using conventional and molecular methodologies.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience/knowledge related to cross-hybridization of varieties, rapid generation advance, PCR, marker and trait screening, and analysis of quantitative trait and marker data.

  • High school Diploma and up to 2 years relevant experience or equivalent combination.

  • Applicants for this position should have training in laboratory and greenhouse techniques, statistical analysis.

  • Highly motivated and good interpersonal skills. 

  • Occasionally, seasonal field work may be expected.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing research publications, to manage information, and to work in a team-oriented environment.

  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

  • Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and wellbeing.

  • Must have and maintain a valid and unrestricted NYS Drivers License and be cleared to drive for university business"

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and guidelines

  • Prior experience ordering supplies and maintaining a clean and organized laboratory.

  • Bachelor of Science in Biology, Genetics or Plant Breeding
