Job Description

Purpose:

The Technician I serves as a technician within the joint machine shop shared by Mechanical Engineering and Physics. Evaluates, selects and executes standard and advanced fabrication techniques used in manual and CNC machining practices, instructs and supervises Mechanical Engineering students on safe use of equipment, provides assistance to staff and students regarding fabrication of parts.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate, operate, and maintain TAMU machines; CNC and manual equipment (mills, lathes, and general metal shop equipment.)
  • Maintain tooling and machines for acceptable performance.
  • Assist with leading training sessions on manual shop equipment, CNC machines, and related software. provide technical assistance to students, staff, and faculty.
  • Assist trained students in completing projects for courses such as Senior Design.
  • Keep the work area and equipment clean, orderly, and perform routine maintenance as required.
  • Assist with maintenance of the Rapid Prototyping Studio on an as-needed basis, including small desktop CNC maintenance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What we need:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

What is helpful:

  • Some related experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in metal fabrication, manual and CNC machining, and related software.
  • Basic-to-intermediate computer skills.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to interact effectively and in a professional manner with the university community, public, and the students to be served.
  • Ability and willingness to train inexperienced users on machine shop equipment.
  • Ability to set up, program, and operate CNC controls.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work, as well as attend to detail.

  • Main Campus – College Station, TX.
  • Some positions may have potential for a flexible work schedule or location.
