The Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University was established in 1979 to conduct basic and applied research in robotics technologies relevant to industrial and societal tasks. Seeking to combine the practical and the theoretical, the Robotics Institute has diversified its efforts and approaches to robotics science while retaining its original goal of realizing the potential of the robotics field. The facility includes approximately 100,000 square feet at the main Pittsburgh campus, another 100,000 square feet at the National Robotics Engineering Center in Lawrenceville and growing.

Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute is seeking a skilled Technical Writer and Content Specialist responsible for creating compelling content for news reporting, social media posts, and website updates, including technical documentation. The role involves the development and implementation of a comprehensive social media strategy in line with organizational goals, along with the creation and management of content for TikTok, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook. The candidate will be proficient in producing engaging content for these platforms, ensuring visual appeal and brand consistency. Collaboration with the Robotics Institute Media, Events & Website team as well as the School of Computer Science Marketing and Communications team is essential for maintaining up-to-date and brand-aligned news stories and digital content. Stakeholder engagement includes liaising with Robotics Institute faculty, staff, alumni and students for the creation of accurate and engaging content. Additionally, the role encompasses website quality assurance through regular assessments and leveraging analytics data to drive actionable tasks, as well as managing internal communications and facilitating faculty outreach to enhance the organization's digital presence.

Responsibilities:

  • Community outreach: service specific outreach activities and student outreach events.

  • Content analysis, development and delivery: web content, instructional guides, marketing materials, communications; including content usability testing of content.

  • Content Creation: Produce engaging TikTok videos, Instagram and LinkedIn posts, and Facebook content. Ensure content is visually appealing, on-brand, and resonates with the target audience.

  • Copywriting and Science Writing: Craft compelling and informative copy for news stories, social media posts and website content. Develop technical documentation as needed for website updates.

  • May train and provide level-one support for web publishing services.

  • Social Media Strategy: Develop and implement a comprehensive social media strategy aligned with organizational goals. Create and manage content calendars for TikTok, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in writing, marketing, communications, or a related field.

  • Strong copywriting and technical writing skills; AP style proficiency required. Proven experience in social media management and content creation.

  • Experience with content management systems and web development processes.

  • Familiarity with social media platform management: TikTok, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, and other relevant platforms.

  • Creative thinking and the ability to bring fresh ideas to digital campaigns.
