About SOM Tech & UCSF’s Basic Science Departments: SOM Tech provides leadership and advocacy across the UCSF School of Medicine’s technology spectrum, from research to program incubation to data security. Fellows will develop an understanding of the breadth of the work in the School of Medicine and explore the complex and unique environment of an academic health system. The School of Medicine’s Basic Science departments are a crucial anchor of UCSF’s research efforts. Their faculty’s unparalleled commitment to, and curiosity about, understanding the underpinnings of biology holds promise for far-reaching impacts on human health. The departments are Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology & Immunology, Biochemistry & Biophysics, and Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology.

About the Role:Tech Support Fellow – This is a hands-on training program. Your work will focus on supporting faculty technology needs in the basic science departments at both Mission Bay and Parnassus campuses. You will work under the day-to-day direction of experienced technology professionals. The focus will be on desktop support for Mac, PC, Linux, and related systems and enterprise applications. You may serve as a department liaison to UCSF IT Center regarding campus computing services, IT service requests, security incidents, etc.

About Fellowships:

  • Fellows will be expected to contribute work as an integral member of multiple teams.
  • Fellows will report to a manager who will guide their work, provide feedback and educational opportunities, and support networking within the School of Medicine and across UCSF.
  • Each full-time fellowship lasts 8 to 9 months and pays $21.67/hour.
  • Fellows will follow the Basic Science department on-site work schedule, splitting your time between UCSF’s Mission Bay and Parnassus Campuses.
  • External training or certificate programs may be made available, if applicable and funding permits.
  • Each fellow will leave with a portfolio of deliverables and professional experience to prepare them to apply and interview for positions in their field both within UCSF and at local companies.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 100% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

  • Interpersonal skills including verbal and written communication, active listening, and critical thinking.
  • Be a flexible team player who can easily work with focused direction and deal with a changing scope of work.
  • Proficient in the use of technology.
