Tech Spark Manager - Mechanical Engineering

In addition, they are using their expertise in interdisciplinary research centers across the university.

Carnegie Mellon University’s department of Mechanical Engineering is searching for a Tech Spark Manager to join their team.  This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. You will contribute to the department by managing the Tech Spark prototyping facility to meet all educational goals, programmatic initiatives, and ensuring a safe and fair use of resources, and such other tasks as assigned to you.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing the day-to-day operations of Tech Spark to support academic, research, extracurricular, and entrepreneurial activities. 

  • Performing regular safety checks and training for all users of the Tech Spark facility, which consists of multiple shops and fabrication areas.   Ensure that all users have successfully completed training to gain access to the facility and equipment.   

  • Managing all workflow, maintenance, safety policies, access controls, usage data, documentation, scheduling, reservations, and purchasing for Tech Spark prototyping facility.

  • Ensuring compliance with all university health and safety policies.

  • Hiring and training of student workers.

  • Collaborating with the Tech Spark Faculty Director to develop and implement high-level initiatives that are supported by professional staff and student workers.

  • Setting schedules and supervising day-to-day activities of Instructors and student workers to meet all Tech Spark programmatic needs including teaching, open hours, and facility improvement.

  • Holding staff open hours to provide fabrication/prototyping/design expertise, mentorship, guidance, and technical assistance to students, faculty, and staff for academic, research, and extracurricular activities of design-build projects.

  • Teaching courses, delivering training events, and supporting other programmatic activities for TechSpark.

  • Working in close partnership with the Tech Spark Faculty Director.  Together, set Tech Spark educational and programmatic goals, as well as assist in curriculum development.

  • Collaborating with the Tech Spark Faculty Director to execute projects for new partnerships brought in by the Tech Spark Faculty Director.

  • Managing partner courses to enhance educational programs across the college of engineering.

  • Interacting effectively and courteously with people at all levels of the organization to help them engage in the facility for courses, research, extracurricular, and entrepreneurial activities.

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Associates degree required (bachelor’s degree preferred)

  • 5-8 years of relevant work experience

Requirements:

  • Successful background check

  • Child Protection Clearances (Act 153)
