The Teaching and Learning, Department Head leads the Auraria Library’s efforts in planning, implementing, and managing information literacy instruction, outreach, and research services.  This position provides leadership for all issues related to the library’s educational role such as student learning, online education, first-year and transfer, curriculum planning, student learning assessment, and instructor development as well as   areas related to the library’s research support role such as scholarly communication, data literacy and support, citation management, research consultations, and campus research recognition and promotion. In response to strategic campus shifts toward hybrid modalities and a new emphasis on research, the Department Head will build an understanding of the library’s role and a framework for advancing the teaching and research missions across campus.

The Department Head leads nine library faculty, a university staff member, and a classified staff member, as well as multiple student assistants.  The Department Head, who reports to the Research, Learning, and User Services, Associate Director is an active member of the public services leadership group, manages the library’s research help services, and participates in the development and evaluation of cross-departmental public services.  The successful candidate is a dynamic, student-focused educator with demonstrated leadership skills who continually transforms and assesses education, research services, and outreach services by gathering and using quantitative and qualitative data to inform planning while actively monitoring the campus curriculum and scholarship. 

As a Library faculty member, the librarian participates on Library and campus-wide committees and in CU Denver faculty governance. 

Located in downtown Denver, Colorado, the Auraria Campus is home to three institutions of higher education – University of Colorado Denver, Metropolitan State University of Denver, and Community College of Denver – both MSU and CCD are Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI), and CU Denver is finalizing its HSI and Asian American Native American Pacific Islander (AANAPISI) designations. The Auraria Library serves the campus’ over 35,000 students, the majority of whom are from the first-generation in their family to enroll in higher education. Reports To

Supervision Exercised

Leads a department of eleven faculty with direct supervision of six faculty.

What you will do:

Leadership in Instruction, Research Support, and Outreach

·         Leads a department of librarians responsible for implementing instructional services, research support, and outreach, including workload distribution, goal setting, and performance evaluation.

·         Continues to build and implement a programmatic instruction plan for the campus’s academic programs, including face-to-face and virtual modes of delivery.

·         Continues to build on existing campus outreach activities, including student, faculty, and staff orientations, campus-wide events, and events promoting library services and resources.

·         Oversees the development of a suite of research support services to meet the needs of scholarly research being conducted on campus.

·         Leads coordination with campus partners to integrate instructional services throughout campus programs, including integration into the three campus learning management systems.

·         Oversees creation, implementation, marketing, and assessment of digital learning objects (tutorials, etc.) to support educational and research needs.

·         Conceptualizes and oversees the library’s web content regarding education, research support, and outreach.

·         Oversees training and professional development opportunities for the department’s faculty and staff on all aspects of library instruction, including theory, pedagogy, best practices, and available resources.

·         Recommends acquisition of tools/resources (e.g., software/hardware) to support the work of the department and coordinates necessary training for those tools/resources.

·         Oversees the Library’s research help services, including methods of offering service, staffing, hours of operation, assessment, and training.

·         Oversees the library’s institutional repository, ensuring collaboration with Special and Digital Collections on issues related to a shared platform which hosts both the IR and Digital Collections.

Organizational Leadership and Campus Partnerships

·         Serves on/collaborates with campus curriculum and instruction committees, First Year Experience offices, educational technology offices, and related campus departments/units and on Library committees and task forces.

·         Communicates with campus faculty development centers and other campus and external partners to create programming and services to support the teaching missions of the three institutions.

·         Leads the effort for the Library to be recognized across campus as an active contributor to student, faculty, and staff learning.

·         Communicates with clarity and transparency with internal and external stakeholders.

·         Leads programmatic outreach to the academic departments and student services offices.

·         Actively promotes an environment of continual improvement by engaging in ongoing learning, information sharing, and professional development as a member of the Auraria Library learning organization.

Other

·         Collaborates with the Head of Access and User Services, Head of Information Technology and Web Services, Head of Collection Development and Strategies and Head of Discovery Systems and Metadata to plan, develop, and implement cross-departmental public services with the aim of excellent over-all user experience. 

·         Collaborates with other library units and Teams to develop services as needed.

·         Other duties as assigned.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established at $77,000 - $80,000.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications you already possess (Minimum Qualifications):

·         Master’s degree in Library or Information Science, or equivalent advanced degree.

·         Experience leading an instruction program in an academic or research library.

·         Supervisory experience in an academic or research library.

Preferred Qualifications to possess (Preferred Qualifications):

·         Experience employing quantitative and/or qualitative research methodologies for programmatic student learning assessment.

·         Experience leading or developing research support services in an academic or research library.

·         Demonstrated experience working successfully with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

·         Experience supervising faculty.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

·         Knowledge and understanding of key issues and trends in information literacy instruction, including inclusive pedagogical practices, learning technologies, and student learning assessment.

·         Knowledge and understanding of key issues and trends in library research support services, including data support and use tools, scholarly publishing, and institutional repositories. 

·         Ability to lead and manage inter-departmental teams.

·         Ability to work well both independently and in a collaborative environment and to contribute to professional service.

·         Ability to create exciting, future-oriented instruction, research support, and outreach programs.

·         Demonstrated experience building working relationships and collaborations with academic programs and/or faculty at an institution of higher education.
