Summary

The University of Michigan, one of the nation's leading public universities, is seeking applicants for a tax advisor position in the Tax Compliance and Planning Office. This office provides tax consulting services and compliance support to the University of Michigan (U-M) and its affiliates. U-M includes Ann Arbor, Flint, and Dearborn campuses as well as Michigan Medicine. Affiliates include the University Musical Society, Alumni Association, Michigan Health Corporation and U-M Health and their subsidiaries, e.g., University of Michigan Health-West, Sparrow Health System, among others. This office manages tax risks arising from various operations, including the long-term portfolio, tax-exempt bonds, athletics, healthcare as well as keeps the university in good standing with tax compliance with all federal, state, local and international taxing jurisdictions.


Responsibilities*

This position will assist the professionals in the Tax Compliance and Planning department:

  • File complete and accurate forms including federal, state, and international tax returns and forms for multiple entities including exempt organizations, partnerships, taxable corporations, charitable vehicles, such as charitable remainder trusts, as well as multiple activities and transactions, including investments in foreign entities, among others, which includes minimizing tax risks and maximizing savings. 
  • Assist in preparing the tax information for U-M's annual income tax return, Form 990-T including reporting taxable income, e.g., Schedule K-1s, and certain foreign investments made by the investment office. 
  • Research and keep current with the tax law and reporting responsibilities.  
  • Develop 'best practices', including policies and tool kits in managing resulting tax risks. 

The intern must provide a deliverable that meets the filing requirements as defined by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and other government tax agencies.


Required Qualifications*
  • A strong background in Finance, e.g, income statements and balance sheets, is preferred. 
  • The candidate should be pursuing or have obtained a bachelor's degree in business administration, finance or accounting, or an equivalent combination of education. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to effectively communicate and work collaboratively with a variety of individuals and units. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with all levels of staff. Strong organizational skills and the ability to meet pressing due dates.
  • Excellent analytical and independent problem-solving skills.


Skills Set
The position will bolster the intern's critical interpretation and communication skills, deepen the interns knowledge of fundamental finance principles, develop a valuable grasp of taxation concepts, and broaden the interns current understanding of the university.


Work Schedule

The internship will be a part-time hybrid position including a flexible work schedule to accommodate for classes or additional obligations.
