Job Description:

The Department of Public Safety is seeking qualified candidate for the Systems Control Technician (SCT) position. Under general supervision, applies knowledge, skills and abilities to locksmith, card access and security systems. The SCT will install, maintain, and repair manual door hardware, electrified card access components, security cameras, and other associated access components. The SCT should have a strong working knowledge of mechanical door hardware as well as diagnostic principals.  The SCT will be able to work as individual or part of a team to accomplish all assigned tasks related to building safety and security infrastructure.  The SCT will participate in on call offering and implementing short and long term solutions with a safety and security mindset.  The SCT will be expected to assist with routine duties such as cutting keys, building keying plans, and other administrative business needs.

 

In addition to Iowa State University's standard background check, candidates are required to successfully complete additional background, thorough reference checks, and pre-employment health evaluation(s) in accordance with the Department of Public Safety's hiring practices.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

• Installs, repairs, replaces, and calibrates complex control system equipment and support systems, such as computerized pneumatic tube systems and the various power distribution monitoring systems.

• Locates problems in systems by monitoring the functioning, interpreting computer readings and conducting performance tests over a period of time of mechanical, pneumatic, electrical, and/or electronic systems.

• Monitors complex control systems for operation data, for appropriate quality assurance purposes, or for system modification purposes through manipulation of software and for operator training and direction.

• Serves as technical consultant in the area of computer-controlled systems for various maintenance shops.

• Reviews construction plans and specifications of outside architects and engineers.

• Defines complex building systems development plans and develops any necessary justifications to support these plans.

• May initiate designs, bid documents, and purchase orders for supplies and services necessary to develop and maintain complex building equipment and support systems.

• Meets with engineers, shop managers, contractors, and vendors relative to the complex building management systems and plans.

• Other duties as assigned by appropriate department or administrative personnel.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and electrical, electronic and/or pneumatic schematics, and engineering concept statements.

• Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing and to execute oral and written instructions.

• Knowledge of hand tools and test equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and signal generators.

• Knowledge of electrical control and electronic theory.

• Ability to lift up to 80 pounds.

• Knowledge of applicable electrical codes.

• Ability to work in a variety of environments including high places, tight places, poorly lighted with exposure to dirt, dust and fumes.

• Knowledge of electrical, electronic, and/or pneumatic control systems in order to diagnose and safely repair.

• Ability to perform mathematical functions.

• Ability to map and track wires through color or different identifier.
