Department Description

This position is part of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine Information Technology (SVM-IT) department. SVM-IT is a matrix organization consisting of the three main functions of IT Operations, Application Development and Project Management. SVM-IT provides services to the faculty, students, staff and affiliates of both the School of Veterinary Medicine and the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH).



Job Summary

The Systems Administrator position, reporting to the Director of IT Operations and the Systems Administrator Supervisor, primarily involves systems administration and providing technical support for production Windows based systems, Active Directory services, cloud-based infrastructure, and backup support for diverse systems and infrastructure within SVM-IT. This role encompasses a blend of technical proficiency, strategic planning, and operational implementation to uphold a resilient and secure IT infrastructure.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

·         Work in a semi-open office space.

·         Work with noise and heat produced by many electronic computing devices.

·         Work occasional overtime and various, flexible hours on short notice (including covering staff shortages, nights, weekends, and holidays).

·         Must be available for week and weekend rotating on-call schedule.

·         May require working with or around areas with sick animals, hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases, and distraught clients.

·         Employee is personally responsible for following health and safety guidelines/instructions.

·         Work in other related areas on an as needed basis.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

·         Advanced experience in system automation and scripting skills using tools like PowerShell, Python, or Bash to streamline administrative tasks and improve operational efficiency.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·         Applies advanced systems concepts in managing Active Directory services, including troubleshooting AD forests, domains, and trusts, user and group administration, Group Policy management, DFS file share services, DNS/DHCP configuration, PKI infrastructure, Intune custom profiles and experience with domain migration and consolidation.

·         Applies advanced systems concepts in administering and optimizing complex Windows Server environments, including experience with Windows Server 2016/2019/2022.

·         Applies advanced systems concepts in deploying, migrating, deploying, and managing cloud-based infrastructure on platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

·         Demonstrated advanced knowledge of security principles and practices, with experience in securing Windows servers, Active Directory, and cloud-based environments against emerging threats.

·         Applies advanced systems concepts in network design and implementation, including VLANs, routing, firewall configuration, and VPN technologies.

·         Demonstrated advanced knowledge of virtualization technologies, including VMware vSphere or Microsoft Hyper-V, with experience in administration of high-availability virtual environments.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:  

·         Demonstrated experience with disaster recovery strategies for Windows-based systems, Active Directory, and cloud infrastructure to ensure business continuity and data integrity using tools such as Veeam, MS Data Protection Manager, CA Arcserve and etc.

·         General knowledge and experience in conducting security risk assessments and developing risk mitigation strategies to proactively identify and address potential security vulnerabilities and threats.

·         Organizational skills and experience using project management principles to define goals, organize and schedule complex technology projects, coordinate project execution, and manage teams as well as, experience using Change Management processes and workflows.

·         Experience working in a hospital environment and/or a higher education environment and demonstrated ability to work individually and as a member of a team.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·         Knowledge with applying the following security frameworks: NIST, PCI, HIPAA, GDPR and IS3/UC Davis CyberSafety (If current or previously employed with UC Davis).

·         Interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to interact with a diverse group of people to include faculty, clinicians, students and staff. Ability to implicitly give and receive directions, information, and knowledge to and from other team members, users, co-workers, managers and vendors.

·         Candidates with industry-recognized certifications such as CompTIA Security+, Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Information Security Manager (CISM), Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), and etc are highly preferred.
