Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
Reporting to the Director of Dining Services, the Sustainability Manager oversees all aspects of the Department’s Sustainability programs; grant management; research; energy management. The Campus Pantry, The Farmers Market, Terp Farm and Food Recovery Program.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Hospitality Management, Public Health, Environmental Policy, Environmental Management, Environmental Science, or related field.
Experience:
Minimum of 5 years of sustainability management and leadership with at least 3 years of supervisory experience of professional and para-professional staff. A Master’s degree may be substituted for two years of supervisory experience. Additional experience in sustainability leadership may be substituted for the degree.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Outstanding leadership, guest service, and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and successfully and build partnerships with co-workers and all levels and types of internal and external stakeholders, including students, faculty, administrators, and government regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to find, write and administer grant proposals.
  • Outstanding skill and ability to communicate complex food and sustainability subjects to the general public.
  • Demonstrated commitment to sustainability, wellness and environmental best practices.
  • Ability to conduct research and data, produce reports and develop strategic and tactical plans.
  • Ability to quickly adapt to an ever-changing environment.
  • Basic knowledge of budgets and administrative processes.

  • Master’s degree
  • Understanding of the public university environment and campus dining programs
  • Working knowledge of business based computer programs, food safety, food sustainability, wellness, energy conservation, food insecurity and Farm to Table.
  • A proven record of working successfully with traditional college-age students.
Additional Certifications:
Must have, or obtain within 90 days of hire and maintain a Prince George’s County Food Service Manager Certification.

Physical Demands
This position is primarily leadership and administrative and typically does not regularly require significant unusual activity. Regular visits to the Terp Farm, Farmers Market, Off Campus Vendors, and Off Campus Environmental Organizations is required.
This is an essential position and incumbent must report to work when the campus is closed due to weather or other emergency situations. Must be able to work a variable schedule including weekends, nights, evenings, and holidays. Annual leave will not be granted for specific periods including the weeks preceding and right after the start of each semester, Football Weekends, Maryland Day, Family Weekend or special events. Must have the manual dexterity to operate equipment with or without accommodation and to lift up to 15 pounds regularly. The University of Maryland is a non-smoking, drug free, weapon free campus.
