Summary

The student selected for this position will help support event planning and trainings associated with the Planet Blue Ambassador (PBA) program at the University of Michigan-Flint. The PBA program is the entry point to sustainability at UM-Flint and beyond. The goal is to empower individuals with the information and resources needed to live, work, and learn sustainably at the UM-Flint. The term for this position is Jan 2024 - May 2024, with the potential for extension.

The selected candidate is expected to be reliable, enthusiastic about environmental stewardship, have strong communications skills (verbal and digital), and have interest in developing engaging events for the campus community.


Who We Are

The Planet Blue Ambassador program was established at the Ann Arbor campus back in 2011 and now, as a result of our university-wide commitment to carbon neutrality, the program was expanded to the Flint and Dearborn campuses.

This position is part of the UM-Flint Planet Blue Ambassador team, you will be collaborating with sustainability staff from the University of Michigan's two other campuses in Dearborn and Ann Arbor.


Responsibilities*
  • Create events that align with sustainability pilots and programs new and on-going for PBA program and partners.
  • Assist in planning and facilitation of events like Maize and Blue days, Mgagement, Sustainability Week, Earth Day Celebration and others.
  • Facilitate student engagement by tabling and engaging with the student body regularly.
  • Lead PBA group trainings, or sustainability workshops and trainings when requested, focusing on evening and weekend trainings when necessary.
  • Support the development and implementation of sustainable event planning toolkits for departmental units and colleges, and student organizations.
  • Create workshops and opportunities to learn in community through toolkit resources.
  • Liaise with departments and student organizations interested in incorporating environmentally friendly changes within their events and programs.
  • Collaborate with multiple teams across disciplines (organizations, departments, staff) to identify opportunities and create interdepartmental workshops, events, and trainings.
  • Attend weekly sustainability intern team meetings.
  • Additional responsibilities as needed. 

Required Qualifications*

Current undergraduate or graduate U-M Flint student.


Desired Qualifications*
  • Excellent communication skills - experience with public speaking about scientific topics for the general public.
  • Enthusiastic and outgoing - experience giving presentations and meeting with new people.
  • Strong computer skills including Google applications (docs, sheets, slides), Canvas, and Zoom.
  • Demonstrates passion for sustainability and environmental justice.
  • Good understanding of the links between sustainability, well-being, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Dedicated work ethic with the initiative to lead a project and see it through to completion.
  • Collaborative spirit - experience working successfully in a team environment.
  • Consistently professional with regard to communication, punctuality, and reliability.
