The JHU Office of Sustainability is seeking talented candidates to fill the position of Sustainability Data Analyst. From technical advisement to planning, behavior change programs, and more, the Office of Sustainability's work spans the physical, academic, and cultural environments of JHU. Our office aims to empower students, faculty, and staff to meaningfully contribute to a more just and sustainable world.


The Sustainability Data Analyst plays an integral role working across administrative and academic units, as well as with students and external stakeholders to advance the university's sustainability monitoring, metrics, analysis, and reporting.


The Sustainability Data Analyst reports to the Sustainability Project Manager, Operations and Data and is responsible for providing analytic support for all sustainability projects with data-related needs, including for the goals outlined in JHU's Climate Action and Sustainability Plan. The Sustainability Data Analyst advances the collection, analysis, management, and communication of data and metrics to a multitude of audiences. This individual will synthesize complex data from multiple sources into compelling stories and reports and serve as a subject expert to internal and external audiences.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Collect, manage, and ensure the quality and integrity of data from multiple university partners and sources (e.g. energy, water, materials, food, transportation, waste)
  • Develop relationships with campus-wide partners to ensure strategic, efficient and integrated data collection processes.
  • Oversee annual greenhouse gas inventory including data collection and aggregation, and coordination with third-party verification.
  • Contribute to establishing a scope 3 GHG initiative, and start estimating emissions from commuting, air travel, and other scope 3 emissions categories.
  • Support the adoption of software programs and tools that enhance data aggregation, integrity, reporting, and visualization.
  • Coordinate with outside contractors, vendors, and consultants to enhance product selection and services that advance sustainability offerings at the university.
  • Collect and analyze metrics to measure the success of sustainability programs across the university.
  • Develop reports and communications necessary for stakeholder transparency and decision-making. Reports include, but are not limited to, sustainability reports, web-based dashboards, charts or infographics.
  • Collaborate with other members of the Office of Sustainability to translate complex data into compelling stories and visual representations.
  • Support the use of the campus as a testbed for innovation, and work with faculty, students, and staff to enhance campus-based applied sustainability research; supervise research assistants and/or interns as needed.
  • Provide flexible support on data-related and analytic needs to other team members on an as-needed basis.
  • Serve as a content expert on sustainability data and environmental performance metrics to JHU technical subcommittees and working groups.
  • Represent JHU at select conferences, events, and consortia as a means to share research and information and ensure adoption of sector-wide best practices.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree required in sustainability, environmental science, data science, engineering, or a related field required.
  • Minimum three years of progressive experience in a mix of sustainability, data analysis, database management, software engineering, program/project management, or other related experience in sustainability required.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Experience with data management, analytics, and statistical programming languages.
  • Experience using Python in a professional setting, including Pandas and NumPy.
  • Experience using data visualization tools (i.e. Tableau, Power BI or similar).
  • Highly proficient in MS Office software with advanced knowledge of Excel.
  • Strong analytical skills and self-starter.
  • Strong soft skills including ability to work with a variety of individuals at various levels across the University and externally.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, including the ability to identify and remove roadblocks.
  • Strong project management skills required including the ability to lead a project team, prioritize tasks and provide mentoring as needed.
  • Experience working with energy and/or sustainability metrics preferred.
  • Must possess strong business acumen and demonstrate strategic thinking.
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively with others and function well as part of a team.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize activity and promptly raise any obstacles.
  • Experience working in higher education a plus.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree preferred.
