Summary

The student selected for this position will help support communications campaigns associated with the Planet Blue Ambassador (PBA) program at the University of Michigan-Flint. The PBA program is the entry point to sustainability at UM-Flint and beyond. The goal is to empower individuals with the information and resources needed to live, work, and learn sustainably at UM-Flint. The term for this position is Jan 2024 - May 2024, with the potential for extension.

The selected candidate is expected to be reliable, enthusiastic about environmental stewardship, have strong communications skills (verbal, written, digital, development of visual graphics), and have interest in marketing and advertising.


Who We Are

The Planet Blue Ambassador program was established at the Ann Arbor campus back in 2011 and now, as a result of our university-wide commitment to carbon neutrality, the program was expanded to the Flint and Dearborn campuses.

This position is part of the UM-Flint Planet Blue Ambassador team, you will be collaborating with sustainability staff from the University of Michigan's two other campuses in Dearborn and Ann Arbor.


Responsibilities*
  • Develop and post content for our e-newsletter, social media, and blog.
  • Assist maintenance of a digital communications content calendar.
  • Create advertisements and promote events through main campus avenues and social media, highlighting interdepartmental engagement events like Maize and Blue days, Mgagement, Sustainability Week, Earth Day Celebration and others.
  • Assist in creation of PBA brand for cohesive and recognizable content across campus.
  • Facilitate student engagement by flyering and marketing for the student body regularly.
  • Collaborate with multiple teams across disciplines (organizations, departments, staff) to identify and create digital opportunities to promote environmentally-friendly habits.
  • Assist in creation of digital and physical signage for PBA projects and pilots.
  • Assist in facilitation of outreach and creation of applicable outreach tools (e.g. slide decks, emails, templates)  for PBA group trainings, workshops, and events.
  • Co-create sustainability toolkit resources that align with current PBA and university needs.
  • Attend weekly sustainability intern team meetings.
  • Additional responsibilities as needed.

Required Qualifications*

Current undergraduate or graduate U-M Flint student.


Desired Qualifications*
  • Familiarity with Canva and other graphic design software, and willing to learn software for digital screens.
  • Strong computer skills including Google applications (docs, sheets, slides), Canvas, and Zoom.
  • Excellent communication skills - experience with writing about scientific topics for the general public.
  • Consistently professional with regard to communication, punctuality, and reliability.
  • Demonstrates passion for sustainability and environmental justice.
  • Good understanding of the links between sustainability, well-being, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Dedicated work ethic with the initiative to lead a project and see it through to completion.
  • Collaborative spirit - experience working successfully in a team environment.
