The University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a Surgical Technician 1 with Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida.

The Surgical Technician 1 assists the surgical team during operative procedures by arranging and inventorying a sterile set-up for operations and passing items to doctors and nurses. The incumbent also assists in preparing and moving patients and in cleaning the operating room areas

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                                          

  • Secures and prepares all supplies required for surgical intervention.

  • Ensures the preparation and maintenance of the sterile field in the operating room.

  • Performs instrument counts prior to each procedure.

  • Prepares patient skin for surgical treatment.

  • Positions and re-positions patient during surgery.

  • Helps monitor patient during surgery.

  • Provides supportive care during the pre-operative phase.

  • Performs scrub functions.

  • Collects and labels specimens taken during surgical procedures.

  • Follows all federal, state, and local rules and regulations.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                                         

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent

Certification and Licensing:

Certification in relevant specialty or field (CST Certification)

Experience:

Minimum 1 year of relevant experience

Department Specific Functions

  • Certification as a Surgical Technologist preferred.

  • Dons surgical attire and personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Gathers, checks, and opens supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure.

  • Performs the surgical scrub and dons gown and gloves.

  • Sets up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for the procedure.

  • Performs initial instrument, sharps and sponge counts with the circulating nurse.

  • Assists the team members in gowning and gloving.

  • Assists with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field.

  • Participates in the surgical site and patient verification during the time out procedure.

  • Secures tubing, cords, and other sterile accessories.

  • Prepares and anticipates additional instrumentation, equipment and supplies for usage during the procedure.

  • Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies to surgeon during the procedure.

  • Maintains a neat and organized sterile field.

  • Labels medications and solutions on the surgical field according the National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG).

  • Measures and passes medications, hemostatic agents and irrigation solutions utilized during the surgical procedure.

  • Holds retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon.

  • Sponges or suctions the operative site.

  • Cuts suture material as directed by the surgeon.

  • Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.

  • Performs additional counts as necessary, during relief, prior to closing, and final, according to the surgical counts policy.

  • Prepares sterile dressings and/or immobilization devices.

  • Prepares and passes off specimen(s) as appropriate.

  • Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.

  • Returns instruments to the workroom for decontamination and returns unused supplies and instruments to their designated areas.

  • Assists other member of the team with the sanitation/cleaning of the room.

  • Assists in prepping the operating room for the next patient.

  • Prepares the surgical suite, ensuring environmental safety for the patient and personnel.

  • Participates in the stocking of sub sterile rooms and picks up the supplies for cases as needed.

Additional duties assisting in circulating:

  • Assists in transferring patient to and from the operating room table.

  • Assists with positioning the patient, using appropriate equipment and anatomical principles to avoid patient injury.

  • Completes the patient skin prep prior to draping by the surgical team.

  • Helps transport the patient to the post-anesthesia care unit as needed.

Maintains complete confidentiality of all medical, financial, and employee information, and other sensitive materials.

Adheres to the UHealth and Departmental policies, procedures, and safeguards University assets.
