Position Summary:
Assist to promote and restore patients' health through supervised nursing care to assigned patients within the nursing process; collaborate with physicians and multidisciplinary team members. The nature of the job is diverse with frequent new and varied work situations. The job involves a moderate degree of complexity. Demonstrates adherence to proper surgical procedures with strict aseptic technique and safety in the use of instruments, equipment, and showing integrity by surgical team is compliant with sterile technique. Function as a First Assistant or as an additional assistant to the surgeon, within scope of practice. Ensure adherence to Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignment may include pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric age groups

Detailed responsibilities:
* PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops
* MISCELLANEOUS - Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned
* POLICIES AND PROCEDURES - Maintain established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality assurance programs
* ASSIST - Able to assist on all major and minor surgical procedures
* QUALITY - Has a strong understanding of The Joint Commission (TJC) expectations and compliance of sterility and machine controls and how it can affect patient care
* SURGICAL TECH - Assists in preparing rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies, medications and equipment, opens sterile supplies, sets up for procedures and maintains an orderly surgical field
* DUTIES - Adequately prepares for procedures/surgeries and anticipates physician’s needs during procedures/surgeries
* POLICY - Handles specimens/cultures according to policy and performs sponge, instrument and sharps counts according to policy
* ASSIST - Assists with maintaining surgeon preference cards
* PARTICIPATION - Participates in department/hospital cost containment and lean programs
* TRAINING - Orients, instructs and trains assigned personnel and/or students. Train all new staff on the setup and operation of the Robot
* TEAM WORK - In collaboration with the health team members in the preadmission, may participate in preoperative assessment and planning for selected surgical patients
* DUTIES - Able to perform suturing, preparation of surgical site, draping, retracting, hemostasis, dressing application, manual dexterity, knowledge of procedure, able to follow directions, and able to anticipate surgeon/procedure needs and able to operate stapling devices
* DUTIES - Ensure all GI equipment and scopes are set up and functioning prior to start of procedure. Transport used scopes to Special Procedure area
* PATIENT CARE - Assist with patient positioning, ensuring all safety measures are met and patient is protected according to standards
* SUPPLIES - Ensure all supplies for bariatric and robot procedures are up to par levels and order in collaboration with Materials Management Coordinator
* ASSIST - Assist OR team with meeting minimal turnover times - to include housekeeping duties, room set up, opening supplies for procedures and assisting RN as needed
* PATIENT SAFETY - Report potential and actual patient safety, concerns, medical errors and or near misses in a timely manner thru the chain of command and document within the PSN system
* COMPLIANCE - Active participation in hospital strategic initiatives such as quality improvement and monitoring TJC compliance
* PATIENT CARE - Establish a compassionate environment by providing emotional psychological and spiritual support to patient, friends and families
* MONITOR - Monitor and initiate corrective action to maintain the environment of care including equipment and material resources
* CLERK - Perform a variety of clerical duties in support of assigned area as required
* TEAMWORK - Maintain a cooperative relationship among health care teams and resolve patient problems and needs by utilizing multidisciplinary team strategies
* PATIENT SAFETY 1 - Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols
* PATIENT SAFETY 2 - Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes
* PATIENT SAFETY 3 - Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk
* PATIENT SAFETY 4 - Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner
* PATIENT SAFETY 5 - Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may "not seem right"

* First Assist Certification
* CPR for Healthcare/BLS Prov or Prof Rescuers w/in 30 days

Physical Conditions:
Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects or people. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
