Job Summary

UCSF seeks a motivated and talented Team Lead!

Drive business process and system enhancement projects
Provide leadership, guidance, and supervision
to the Contracts & Grants Accounting (CGA) Project and Data team.
In this role you will:

  • Perform quality control and approval of all team members’ work;
  • Identify and propose business process and system enhancements;
  • Interpret policies (e.g., fiscal management, human resources, post-award management);
  • Demonstrate expertise in project management, data management, and award management;
  • Manage professional relationships with customers, partners, and sponsors;
  • Oversee personal and team workloads to ensure office service levels are maintained.
About the team

Our helpful and friendly Project and Data Management team provides customer-oriented, value-added award management services to UCSF Principal Investigators, research administrators, and university partners through project management, reporting, and data management for sponsored research awards.

About the Projects

Projects are focused on business processes and system enhancement.

Business process examples: streamline payment application process; develop the process for CGA to update/maintain the data qualities

System process examples: develop campus-wide dashboard; work with IT to develop and test new financial system functions

Department Description

The UCSF Controller’s organization delivers full accounting services and related systems for faculty, staff, and students, UCSF Foundation, all University departments, and any outside entities who have a business relationship with the University. Services provided include General Ledger, Capital and Cash Accounting, Payroll, Student Loan Billing and Collections, and Sponsored Research (Contracts & Grants) Accounting. The Office uses sophisticated technology to account for and report on UCSF's financial activity.  

The Contracts & Grants Accounting (CGA) unit of the Controller’s Office supports UCSF research and education by providing collaborative and advisory post-award management and financial oversight of sponsored research and campus-based student loans.  The CGA unit manages award set-up, billing, collections, financial reporting, after-the-fact verification of payroll, and closeout of sponsored research contracts and grants. CGA monitors compliance with applicable federal, state, local, or other sponsor regulations and requirements as well as University policies, collaborating with principal investigators, research administrators, sponsors, the Office of Sponsored Research (pre-award), and other campus and University departments.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Seven (7) or more years of relevant progressive experience including three (3) or more years of experience working in a supervising role in the relevant field.
  • Proficiency with SQL query development.
  • Advanced competency with Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience in business process improvement, dashboard development, project management, and User Acceptance Testing.  
  • Strong critical thinking, persuasion/negotiation, mentoring, leadership/management, problem-solving, human resources policies, and procedures relating to management responsibilities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication.
  • Strong attention to detail and quantitative and analytical & statistical skills are essential.
  • This position is remote-based and requires one to work on-site four to six times a year (at the employee's expense) at our Mission Center office, located at 1855 Folsom Street, San Francisco.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Microsoft Access database development.
  • Relevant work experience with the University of California (UC) pre- or post-award.
  • Lean Certification.
