Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The goal of the UNC Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (HPDP) is to prevent chronic disease and reduce health disparities. Investigators and staff at HPDP work with communities to conduct research, provide training and translate research findings into policy and practice. Research areas include nutrition and physical activity, cardiovascular health, diabetes, obesity, healthy food access, cancer prevention and control, children’s health, rural health, and health equity. HPDP is part of a network of 26 CDC Prevention Research Centers across the United States.
Position Summary
No Kid Hungry NC will be offering the SummerMeals4NCKids Internship program for college students to support the Summer Nutrition Program during the summer of 2024. Interns with be hired as paid employees of No Kid Hungry NC at UNC Chapel Hill and will be placed with NC Summer Nutrition Program Sponsors. Most of the time will be focused on projects/activities with the sponsor, but interns will also participate in orientation/training, weekly check-ins, and activities with the No Kid Hungry NC team. This position will support the YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina. This summer the Y will be hosting 8 summer day camp locations where all attendees participate in the SFSP feeding program. The plan is to create no less than 2 non-congregate feeding locations in rural qualifying areas. It is the Y’s hope to meet a larger need for those kids who do not have easy access to meals during the summer months when school is out. The intern will be heavily responsible for keeping those non-congregate sites running by tracking meals, participation of families, getting the word out, and helping determine inventory of meals provided. They will also assist with the Y’s other SFSP sites and food inventory management as needed. 
This is an in-person internship. YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina corporate office is located at 3408 Wilshire Blvd. Wilmington, NC. Also, non-congregate feeding locations will be established in Brunswick, Pender and possibly Sampson Counties. One day a week to each new location within those counties will be necessary, though we hope to have transportation provided to those locations, via a van or Y bus. 
Orientation with the No Kid Hungry NC team is currently planned to take place the week of May 20, 2024. The anticipated dates of the in-person internship with the YMCA of Southeastern NC are June 5-August 9, 2024. 
Duties may include: 
* Distributing promotional materials for the Summer Nutrition Program 
* Participating and contributing in social media campaigns 
* Planning/implementing end of summer celebrations 
* Taking pictures/videos at meal sites and summer meals events 
* Helping to prepare or package summer meals 
* Distributing summer meals 
* Track meals distributed 
* Serving as site supervisor 
* Providing nutrition education activities to children at meal sites when opportunity is available 
* Creating nutrition education materials to distribute to children and families 
* Planning and/or implementing enrichment activities for distribution at meal sites 
* Develop a data gathering tool to receive feedback from children and families on the program 
* Developing resources to highlight/share program successes 
* Helping with training program volunteers/staff as needed 
* Other duties as assigned
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
The internship is open to college students.
- Students must have been at a community college, college, or university during the 2023-2024 academic year. 
- Interns must be at least 18 years old.

- Interest in child nutrition and improving food and nutrition security.
- Knowledge of and/or experience with school and/or summer nutrition programs
- Commitment to working with diverse communities
