Are you an enthusiastic, outgoing, dynamic, and self-directed individual?! Do you wish to gain leadership skills, educational experience, and have FUN inside work and still have enough time to have fun outside of work?! Mad Science is currently hiring full-time summer lead and assistant camp instructors from June through August! Camps run from 9:00 - 3:00 pm, so you could be out of work as early as 3:15/3:30pm almost every weekday this summer!

Facilitating Mad Science Camp programs requires high energy and working with children. But, you don't have to be a scientist to work with us! We'll teach you everything you need to know and all the Mad Science tricks before sending you off on your own.

Working with children from 1st-6th grade, you will inspire the next generation of scientists through our innovative camp program. Our staff is made up of teachers, ed-techs, retired teachers, artists, farmers, aspiring teachers, people seeking diverse work experience, and all of the above!

As a Lead staff, you will be in charge of facilitating our curriculum. Most of the time, you will have the aid of our Assistant Instructors. You teach just one topic for the entire summer. Some topics include Robotics, Chemistry, Engineering, Inventing, Anthropology, and more! We do our best to match you with your desired themed for the summer.

Your daily hours come to about 6.5-7 hours. After the first week, we build proficiency in our process. Please note, at our Portland location we run Aftercare, this runs until 5:30pm and we provide additional compensation. We have some weeks built in as days off, with the options to assist others or take the week off.

Requirements

Requirements:

  • An Outgoing, animated, fun personality! (Being weird is a good thing here!)
  • A dependable car as you will be required to commute to different locations throughout Maine and New Hampshire
  • Commit to the entire summer schedule. Some camp topics offer 1-2 weeks off during the summer season.
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Reliability and punctuality
  • Good attitude is a requirement

Preferred:

  • Experience working with children ages 5-12
  • Classroom and behavioral management skills
  • Organized, independent, and have attention to detail
  • Have the ability to work with up to 20 children at a time (with some assistance and a 1:10 student to teacher ratio)
  • Science Course Work (You do NOT need a science background, but interest in science and learning is crucial!)
  • Experience working with special needs
  • College degree or pursuit of higher education
  • Classroom and Experiential Teaching experience
  • Current CPR/First Aid Certification (Certification may be provided)

Also, looking for an internship? We are also looking for interns to step into an Assistant Role. We'll conduct weekly check-ins to make sure that you're getting all you need! You'll receive 40 hours paid training in child development, behavioral management, group dynamics, team building, collaboration & more!

All staff must complete a background check in order to work with Mad Science participants in a camp setting.

Benefits

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Lead /Assistant Instructor for Camps: $110-$143 per day week + Set Travel Compensation
  • Camp Dates: June 20th- August 26th (some start the week after)
  • Orientation is required, but flexible.
  • Orientation dates (tentative): First or Second Week of June
  • Orientation Compensation: $80
  • PAID Training: Additional training will be given per topic before camp start dates.
  • Training Compensation: $18/hour
  • Instructors teaching in Portland will be required to do AfterCare 1-2 times per week while at Chevrus School. This will be a few times per instructor for the entire duration of summer. The schedule will be determined before the start of camp. Compensation is an additional $25/hour per aftercare that may go until 5:30.
