Job Description

Summer Resident Assistant

The Resident Assistant (RA) position at the University of Nevada, Reno offers undergraduate students a unique opportunity to support their education while living on campus. Responsible for fostering a positive community, Resident Assistants assist students in acclimating to university life and promoting learning both inside and outside the classroom. RAs are expected to be available for training and duty rotations, with limitations on outside employment to ensure job performance and academic success.

Responsibilities

Acting as role models, RAs fulfill various duties including:

  • Community development through programming and peer support

  • Enforcement of residence hall policies for safety and security

  • Administrative tasks such as checking residents in and out, and handling maintenance requests

Required Qualifications

  • Candidate must be enrolled at the University of Nevada, Reno

  • Candidate must be eligible to live in the residence halls

  • Candidate must be a full-time student in good standing

  • Candidate must maintain and semester GPA of 2.50 or higher throughout employment

  • Candidate must maintain 30 credits of coursework per academic year or an average of 15 credits per semester

  • Candidate must have a minimum of 2 semesters of college or university full-time status

  • Candidate must have the ability to handle at least 15 credits per semester while balancing student leadership responsibilities

Summer Conference Assistant and Lead Summer Conference Assistant

The University of Nevada, Reno is also seeking to hire Summer Conference Assistants (SCAs). SCAs will work directly with visiting summer conferences groups and summer orientations, providing customer service and acting as the point of reference for guests who need assistance or information. SCAs must be available to reside on-site with all conferences that reserve summer housing on campus, while serving different roles as required by conference and orientation groups, summer school students and changing departmental needs.

Conference Operations

During the course of the Summer:

  • SCAs will work directly with visiting summer conferences groups and summer orientations, providing customer service and acting as the point of reference for guests who need assistance or information.

  • SCAs will be expected to use their knowledge of the campus and the nearby venues and businesses to make the most suitable recommendations and respond to complaints and find an appropriate solution.

  • SCAs will perform a variety of tasks within the broad categories listed below to support conferences, orientations and guests. 

  • SCAs will work directly with visiting summer conferences groups and summer orientations. 

  • SCAs will assist in preparing residence hall accommodations for conference arrivals & departures with typical duties including delivering linen packets, blankets & pillows, key preparation and auditing, on-duty rotation, damage reports, pulling linens, moving linen carts from one hall to another for pick-up/delivery from our linen vendor and other duties needed to carry out conference operations. 

  • Tasks may require physical motor skills including but not limited to moving furniture and room preparation and lifting up to 50 lbs.

Desk Operations, Safety/Security, and Residential Duties

Please note: These are by no means all of the responsibilities of a SCA. Other tasks may be assigned that are not included in this description. The SCA position is a paraprofessional position within the Student Services Division and it is expected that each individual will support the Diversity Statement.

  • SCAs will assist with providing security for all guests and residents. 

  • SCAs will have “on-call for duty” responsibilities and must carry duty phone at all times on scheduled days (on-call hours do not count towards the required number of working hours per week, however responding to calls will).

  • SCAs need to be familiar with and enforce residence hall policies, and report individuals that violate these policies. 

  • SCAs need to respond to and assist with crises such as fire alarms, power outages, safety and maintenance concerns, and other emergencies. 

  • SCAs need to communicate any safety concerns or emergencies to supervisor.

  • SCAs must live in accordance with residence hall policies. 

  • SCAs must work front desk assistant hours. 

  • SCAs must be available to reside on-site with all conferences that reserve summer housing on campus, while serving different roles as required by conference and orientation groups, summer school students and changing departmental needs. 

  • SCAs may need to direct conference guests to a safe location or away from danger, depending on the situation.  

  • SCAs are responsible for checking guests into and out of their room, posting signs, filling out incident reports to document incidents/violations and roster verification checks. 

  • SCAs are required to attend staff meetings. 

  • Any outside activity/work must not interfere with on-duty weekday/weekend responsibilities and must not result in unsatisfactory performance of academics or SCA responsibilities

Required Qualifications

  • Candidate must be enrolled at the University of Nevada, Reno

  • Candidate must be in good academic standing and eligible to live in the residence halls.

  • Candidate must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.3 or higher throughout employment

  • Candidate must be enrolled in classes for the following Fall semester after employment

    • However, they must not take more than one class during each Summer session, and may not take mini-session classes due to the training schedule

    • It is suggested that SCAs do not hold additional on-campus employment during the time they are employed in this Summer role.

Schedule

Summer Conference Assistants will be required to live in housing at University of Nevada for the duration of the Summer (May 17 – August 15); however, the position’s contract will not end until August 15th.

Based on conference scheduling, there may be a need for SCAs to work an additional 10-20 paid hours per week. These additional hours may be working on conference related projects or working the front desk of the residence hall.  

Compensation Grade

Student Employee Level 1

Paid hours will be compensated at the rate of $12.00/hour (Returning workers, those workers that have worked for the RLHFS department for at least 2 semesters shall be compensated at the rate of $12.50/hour)

*The University of Nevada, Reno will compensate SCAs for the length of time served by furnishing a room (potentially with a roommate, depending on building occupancy), utilities and meal plan. This position requires 20 hours/week for SCAs to qualify for housing and meal plan.
