Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno is seeking to hire a student employee to work as a Graphic Designer for Inkblot.

Standards

  • Designers must save their fonts in their folder in case someone else needs to go in and edit a file

  • Be open to learning about ADA Compliance and accessible designs

  • Always add the disclaimer and icons to files except on TV ads

  • Make all necessary promotions with templates

  • Make files with outlines and without outlines

  • Keep a clean folder

  • Always post to Basecamp

  • Maintain deadline and communicate when finished

  • Save both JPG and PDF

  • Save AI PDF as “smallest file size” with “bi-cubic” downsizing to 300 PPI, 300 PPI, 500 PPI

  • AI > Photoshop

  • Refer to templates in Resources and logo sheet

Supervision of Others

No direct supervision of others. Designers correspond with Account Coordinators for project changes. Designers should be communicative, and collaborate with social media managers, video team, Assistant Director and Director when needed for project changes and additions.

Consequences of Error/Responsibility for Decisions

The Designer is perhaps the most essential piece of Inkblot. If the designer makes a mistake, the whole team feels it. It is important for designers to do their best job because students base their opinions of ASUN based on what they see. We want the designer’s work to be good quality to keep ASUN’s reputation intact.

Responsibilities

Design: 95%

  • Create a design that gives the campus a message

  • Follow established Inkblot timeline and deadlines

  • Notify the Account Coordinator when any major updates are made to the design through Basecamp (ex. proof, finished design, theme done)

  • Create designs with Inkblot, University, and ASUN standards and policies in mind

  • Collaborate with Lead Designer for help/ideas on projects

  • Attend weekly meetings to discuss the status of projects

  • Use Inkblot approved templates when starting a new promotion

  • Make sure the Account Coordinator gives you the information exactly how you need it (make it known if they did not)

  • Use only the information from Basecamp, from nowhere else (unless otherwise stated)

  • Get a copy of the final draft for you to maintain a designer portfolio

  • Keep your folder and Basecamp projects organized up to standards so they are easy to navigate

  • Manage files on the design server and in Basecamp so that others can find .ai file and pdfs easily

Miscellaneous Tasks: 5%

  • Be ready to assist anyone in the office whenever they need it(Sometimes a deadline can only be met with help)

Required Qualifications

Knowledge, Abilities, and Analytical Requirements:

Graphic Designer must:

  • Be enrolled at the University of Nevada, Reno

  • Have an understanding for Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator

  • Have an understanding for the principles of design

  • Have the ability to send a message through graphic illustration

  • Understand what the standards, policies, and procedures of Inkblot, ASUN, and the University as well as their significance

  • Understand and utilize the resources for designers (Big printer, track pads, scanner, etc.)

  • Be able to take direction well

  • Be able to learn and grow as a designer

  • Be able to work within a timeline and meet deadlines

  • Be familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook

  • Be organized and flexible

  • Be respectful of the office and its associates

  • Develop knowledge of Apple computers

  • Demonstrate attention to detail
