Job Description

Arts and culture are central to any college campus, and the University of Nevada, Reno is no exception. Whether its concerts funded by ASUN, the balloon races or the wealth of new books, movie or music that could be reviewed, the Arts and Entertainment desk keeps the readers of The Nevada Sagebrush up-to-date on all the goings-on of Reno's rich and diverse arts scene.  

Applicants should have experience writing and reporting news on a deadline, as well as a strong knowledge of local arts and culture. 

Applicants should also have a basic understanding of media ethics and media law, especially as they pertain to reporting on a college campus.  

Applicants are expected to be able to write articles throughout the week and publish articles regularly on the Nevada Sagebrush website. 

Responsibilities 

  • Write, edit and curate content for the two pages of the Arts & Entertainment section and update website content throughout the week.  

    • Content should be as community-focused as possible 

    • This might include interviews with local artists, spotlights on local restaurants, etc.  

    • Other content, such as movie or music reviews or columns unrelated to Reno or its arts and culture should be run in moderation.  

    • The section requires at least one feature or feature-style piece per week 
       

  • Recruit and maintain relationships with contributing writers 

  • When volunteers do write for the section, the editor is the primary editor for that work 

  • It is up to the editor to assign individual deadlines to individual writers 

    • No matter what individual deadlines are, all work being published in the Tuesday print edition must be in to the Copy Desk by 11:00 AM Saturday
       

  • Online-first or online-exclusive articles are assigned deadlines on an article-by-article basis, but it is the editor's responsibility for enforcing these deadlines

  • Assist in page layout, design and editing during deadlines 

  • Ensure all A&E content is posted to NevadaSagebrush.com both in a timely manner and in a manner consistent with the quality and style guidelines of The Sagebrush

Required Qualifications

  • Candidate must be a student of the University of Nevada, Reno

  • Candidate must maintain a 2.0 GPA and be enrolled in at least 15 credits

  • Candidate must have experience writing with AP style

  • Candidate must be familiar with local arts and culture and should be willing to write, pitch or assign stories related to Reno-specific arts and entertainment 

  • Candidate must be familiar with current Sagebrush work (articles, multimedia, social media) 

  • Candidate must have experience writing headlines, or experience with or knowledge of SEO and the elements of a good headline

  • Candidate must have experience writing copy for social media, especially Facebook and Twitter

    • Example: When a writer or editor submits a story, they must also submit a copy for an accompanying Facebook and Twitter post beneath it so that the social media manager has a baseline with which to write and edit the ultimate social media posts

Preferred Qualifications

  • Candidates with experience using Adobe Creative Cloud (especially InDesign), multimedia programs (Premiere Pro, Audition, After Effects) are encouraged to apply
