Position Summary
This recruitment is to fill one part-time (less than 24 hours a week) Student Laboratory Assistant position for the Harper Nanotoxicology Laboratory in the Department of Environmental and Molecular Toxicology at Oregon State University. The research laboratory is located in ALS 1087.
The Harper laboratory investigates the environmental health and safety impacts of nanotechnology and nanoscale materials in the environment. Research studies in our laboratory employ:
  • Rapid assays to quickly determine the toxic potential of nanoscale materials.
  • Investigative tools to evaluate nanomaterial physicochemical properties.
  • Informatics to identify the specific features of a nanomaterial that govern its environmental behavior and biological interactions.

The Student Laboratory Assistants will focus primarily on nanoscale plastics degraded from consumer products and their fate and impacts on living organisms. Additional laboratory maintenance work will also be expected when needed.
Position Duties
60% Laboratory research
  • Experiments to identify the impacts on biological systems from exposure to micro and nano-sized plastic particles
  • Data collection
  • Data analysis
  • Presentations
  • Writing
  • Other experimental/professional assistance as needed
  • Working with others to coordinate tasks and help complete experiments.

40% General operations related
  • Routine animal maintenance
  • Dishware
  • Cleaning, organizing and labeling as needed
Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • The applicant must be detail oriented, organized and dependable
  • Must be willing to learn new skills and work well both independently as well as within a team environment.
  • Follow written and oral instruction.
  • Some weekend hours may be necessary.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Criminal History Check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in Youth Programs may have additional Criminal History Checks every 2 years.
