Student Support Services Academic/Career Coordinator

 Position Summary

The Student Support Services Academic/Career Coordinator is responsible for advising Student Support Services participants on issues related to transition to college, academic issues such as coursework and program choices, and career choice. The coordinator will accomplish these responsibilities both through in-person guidance, as well as by developing handouts, written materials, and other resources for students.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

1.      Lead innovative programming that supports academic belonging for all.

 2.      Provide career development and job search advising to Student Support Services students, both in individual and group settings.

3.       Help Student Support Services participants to understand the academic and administrative processes, procedures, and expectations of college programs, and in planning and developing a course of study, including degree/certificate plans.

 

4.      Teach study skills and career development seminars for Student Support Services participants.

5.      Coordinate returning student retention and activities in conjunction with the Director.

6.       Provide counseling\advising designed to alleviate barriers to student success.

 

7.      Oversee students on college processes and graduate school admissions procedures. Work with students on obtaining scholarships, writing essays, courses to take, and complete letters of recommendations.

Education & Experience

Position Qualifications:


Qualifications

1.      Minimum of a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution.

2.      Minimum of two years of experience in academic advising or related services in a higher education or student development setting.

 

3.      Must have the ability to form effective working relationships with students and other employees and must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

 

4.      Must be proficient in the use of administrative computing systems and commonly used programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel.

 

5.      Must have a demonstrated ability to successfully work with students traditionally from underserved populations and address the full spectrum of their educational and career needs.

 

 6.      Must have a demonstrated ability to develop, plan, and conduct workshops and events.

 

7.      Must be able to take initiative and work independently.

 

 8.      Must be able to maintain the confidentiality of student information.

 

 9.      Must have knowledge of TRiO and Student Support Services programming.

 

10. Must have an understanding of and commitment to serving first generation college students, students with documented disabilities.
