Summary of Job Duties:

The Student Success Coach operates as a front-line resource for students and parents in terms of support, advice, direction, and reference. The coach helps students develop skills, behaviors, and habits that contribute to success in college. These include academic and career goal setting, learning strategies, time management and organization, self-regulation, and self-efficacy. Coaches oversee program development and train peer coaches and student workers to be efficient and responsive to the needs of the students. Responding to faculty and staff member concerns about students, coaches create a supportive environment to discuss barriers to success and co-create action plans for change and re-engagement with coursework and campus services. This position reports to the Director of Academic Affairs Retention Office. This position is retention-focused, and meeting retention targets for both traditional and non-traditional students is a fundamental key performance indicator for the position. This position is governed by state and federal laws, and agency/institution policy.

Qualifications:

Required Education and/or Experience

  • Master's Degree;

  • At least one year of related education experience working with post-secondary students.

Preferred Education and/or Experience

  • Master’s Degree in Higher Education, Student Development, or Student Affairs;

  • At least one year of related higher education experience and coaching.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Facilitate student success consulting through 1-on-1 and small group meetings in-person and virtually

  • Communicate appropriate campus referrals and record referrals;
  • Utilize Motivational Interviewing techniques to assist students in developing self-efficacy by identifying and overcoming obstacles that may be impeding academic success;
  • Research, develop, and create documents and tools to support student success in coaching meetings;
  • Assist students in navigating university policies, procedures, and resources;
  • Follow up with students regularly to assess additional support;
  • Triage Care Team referrals;
  • Review faculty/staff referrals within 24 hours during early alert outreach;
  • Encourage students to schedule a coaching appointment within 3 days;
  • Make the appropriate referral to the Student Support Specialist (MSW Social Worker) for on-going support as needed;
  • Follow-up with faculty/staff members on appropriate referrals or actions.

Research, develop, and implement programs and workshops that support student success 

  • As needed, create and facilitate interactive, learning outcome-driven workshops on academic success topics and life transition issues;
  • Research, develop, and create documents and tools to support student success in workshops;
  • Send appropriate surveys after workshops in order to receive feedback;
  • Promote workshops with diverse populations.

Supervise and provide professional development of Graduate Assistant(s) and Peer Coaches.

  • Select, train, and supervise peer coaches;
  • Develop, attend, and support social engagement opportunities to coincide with student success opportunities;
  • Provide appropriate developmental feedback for peer coaches and issues encountered during peer-to-peer interactions;
  • Assess peer coaches and provide on-going leadership and professional development opportunities.

Promote retention and multicultural initiatives and services

  • Work with faculty and staff members on campus to better help and support students;
  • Develop and update communications to advertise services and programs (email, posters, websites, social media, etc.);
  • Attend campus events to promote retention and multicultural initiatives;
  • Assist with promoting and access to tutoring resources both on campus and in the community;
  • Be present at key university events as needed to share retention initiatives and encourage student participation;
  • Share services with campus partners as appropriate.

Assessment

  • Collect and analyze data to measure the success of success coaching and programming.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of coaching, instructional, and mentoring techniques;
  • Knowledge of student development theories and strategies;
  • Knowledge of processes and resources for organizing and leading group and collaborative activities;
  • Knowledge of traditional and online course practices and procedures;
  • Knowledge of trends, issues, and accepted practices relevant to the position;
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Displays a positive attitude to encourage others;
  • Proficient in the use of university applications or automated systems to perform job duties;
  • Ability to balance multiple demands and effectively organize and manage time and tasks;
  • Ability to communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse university community;
  • Ability to be open to changes in operational procedures, technology, and/or organizational structure;
  • Ability to demonstrate high ethical standards of conduct in the performance of his/her job duties and responsibilities.
