Under general direction of the CAO and in close consultation with the Chair, the Student Affairs Manager administers the Graduate and Undergraduate programs overseeing advising, programming, fiscal administration, recruitment, admissions, and student payroll/personnel. Conduct analysis of: curriculum planning and faculty teaching load; all student-related activities and academic matters pertaining to prospective and enrolled students; recruitment and alumni programs. Participate in development of long and short-term department goals and objectives; student advising; supervision of enrollment and course scheduling. Utilizing extensive knowledge and experience with the contemporary music world, act as key advisor to Department Chair, CAO and faculty committees on curriculum, student affairs, graduate admissions, and financial support. Music is a complex, growing department of 90+ graduate students, 180+ majors, 200+ minors, 9,500 annual enrollments, 250 summer enrollments, 3 graduate degrees with 8 curriculums, 5 music major specializations, a music/humanities major, and the interdisciplinary ICAM major. Oversee records management for all department/program students including admission, financial, and academic program records. Fiscal responsibility for graduate support, managing annual allocations in excess of $1,500,000. Administrative coordination of academic degree recitals, composition juries, production, all publicity, ensembles, instrument lessons, summer session, and web content of all academic programs. Work leader for the Student Affairs staff.

  • Occasional overtime to meet deadlines as necessary (e.g., special events, graduate admissions, support deadlines, recruitment activities, faculty committee meetings, concert events, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Experience in conceptualizing, planning, and implementing outreach, recruitment, and admissions programs including maintenance of information from national Music department graduate programs for comparison data and reporting.

  • Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.

  • Extensive knowledge and experience in the contemporary music world.

  • Innovation in programmatic development, implementation, and problem resolution.

  • Working knowledge of business math, budget planning, calculations involving projects and calculations.

  • Expert assessment of students' curriculum needs based on his/her career goal, academic training, and research history.

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and address complex material in a concise and easily interpreted manner.

  • Strong organizational skills. Skill in prioritizing heavy workload to meet shifting deadlines.

  • Theoretical knowledge of computer and information management, and of computer software programs such as Word, Excel, Filemaker, Eudora, Explorer; sufficient to independently analyze complex databases, spreadsheets, and text documents, use email and the Internet, and maintain management of projects. Skill to analyze complex situations and data and design systems with technical staff; develop clear and concise reports or recommendations based on analysis.

  • Initiate multiple programmatic activities independently. Strong analytical, negotiating, decision-making, and supervisory skills.

  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance. Proven experience in counseling college student population, transfer students, disabled students, parents, etc. Skill to advise and listen/counsel diverse personalities using independent and mature judgment. Demonstrated skill in problem solving, conflict resolution and crisis situations.

  • Ability in problem identification and reasoning.

  • Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.

  • Interpersonal skills. Highly developed writing skills and interpersonal skills. Ability to formulate and express ideas. Ability to initiate letters, publications, brochures, reports, proposals in an academic environment.

  • Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.

  • Skill in negotiating conflicts and remaining flexible in a changing work environment.

  • Skill and knowledge to supervise, delegate and set priorities. Ability to adjust to shifting priorities. Ability to hire, train and develop a team framework and mentality; to anticipate problems, identify and analyze available options, and implement corrective actions. Handle confidential information/material in a discrete manner.

  • Analytical reasoning skills. Ability to formulate and retain sight of long-range plans while effectively handling day-to-day issues.

PREFERRED:

  • Working knowledge of UCSD policies and procedures to ensure effective interpretation of educational material and regulations as well as to mange departmental student affairs activities.

  • Knowledge of UCSD academic organization, including functioning of college system, provosts, graduate dean, related vice chancellors, standing committees (CEP), graduate council, etc.

  • Advanced degree in Student Personnel Administration or related area preferred. Experience in higher education and an understanding of the academic process. Application of advanced and original professional approaches to problem solving and supervision.

  • Background Check required.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $56,700 - $97,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $27.16 - $46.70

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
