Job Description
General Description:
The Student Life Advisor will assist in providing student engagement activities including, but not limited to, social and cultural events, involvement in student clubs and organizations, and developing student leadership opportunities to NOVA students. The advisor will work with the Student Life Coordinator to develop training and recognition programs for student leaders and coordinates travel and volunteer opportunities for NVCC students.
Duties and Tasks:
  • Responsible for assisting in the coordination of student clubs.
  • Assists the Student Life Coordinator in providing program coordination oversight and travel arrangements for registered student organizations.
  • Will assist in managing and reconciles student organizations club accounts.
  • Assists the Student Life Coordinator in advising student leaders on academic issues and their development in their leadership roles.
  • Assists the Student Life Coordinator in planning, implementing and evaluating major student life campus and college-wide educational and leadership programs including conferences, retreats and the leadership training workshop series.
  • Assists with the development and revision of college-wide Student Life policy manuals.
  • Advises students on club creation, development and renewals as well as the coordination of all recognition and procedural documents required of college student organizations.

Essential Functions:
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
  • May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration

*This position is restricted and is funded with non-continuous or non-recurring funding and is subject to continuation based on fiscal year funds and the needs of the College.

  • Ability to advise students on program development and management, purchasing, college policies and procedures, and regulations related to student life programming.
  • Ability to oversee and work with students and faculty advisors in campus organizations.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends.
  • Ability to coordinate and facilitate collaborations with student groups, academic departments, administrative departments, and the community.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills. Strong customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and implement education and informational programs in a diverse cultural environment.
  • Working knowledge of current trends in Higher Education Understanding of Social Justice issues on college campuses

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Experience working collaboratively with a wide variety of college students, faculty, and staff members
  • Event planning experience in a college/educational setting.
  • Experience advising and overseeing college student organizations.
  • Administrative experience.

Additional Considerations:
  • Experience working with college students in a student life, student activities, diversity and inclusion/multicultural services, or residential life department.
  • Purchasing experience using eVA or a similar purchasing system
  • Experience coordinating and facilitating collaborations with student groups, academic departments, administrative departments, and the community.
